EVENING STANDARD, January 16, 2001 Copyright 2001 Associated Newspapers Ltd. The Evening Standard (London) January 16, 2001 SECTION: Pg. 61 LENGTH: 262 words HEADLINE: Melody maker BYLINE: Max Bell BODY: EILEEN ROSE * Borderline, W1 IF Eileen Rose packed her past into a designer bag, the logo would read: Boston, Salem, Essex, London. This American-born singer of Irish-Italian extraction shares some ancestry with the rowdy pugilist John L Sullivan. Although she's only a slip of a girl herself, she punches above lightweight. Rose has spent the past decade here and is currently making her name off the back of a well-received solo album, Shine Like It Does, which mixes a strong autobiographical narrative with a blend of country-rock influences that aren't exactly fashionable any more yet still make their melodic mark. She started with the solitary For Marlene, a bittersweet tale about an old friend who was murdered, before dipping into a forthcoming EP called Party Dress that allowed her male players time to shuffle into place. Sometimes known as the Eileen Rose Band, this was more like the orchestral version. At one point she had four guitars, including pedal steel, to lick tunes like Silver Ladle into shape. Without being especially derivative, the singer suggests echoes of a wide variety of other artists, from Biff Rose (no relation) and early Bowie, to kd lang and Bonnie Raitt. The boys in the background had all been around the block - newest member Iain Harvie was in Del Amitri - fortunately, their easy expertise was a bonus rather than a hindrance. By the end of her mini-residency Rose should have bedded down with a full house. She's well worth a look. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 11:41:53 -0500 From: Karen Scully-Clemmons Subject: OV: More info From tugboatrecords.com So i guess we'll all be buying a new album... News: Details of Party Dress, the new EP by Eileen Rose, have now been confirmed. The CD will contain 4 brand new tracks: Party Dress, That's No Way To Say Goodbye, Booze Talkin' (I Ain't Listenin') and New Penny. All tracks were written by Eileen, and produced and mixed by Kris Dollimore and Iain Harvie from Del Amitri, at their TroyTown studio in Rochester, Kent. The EP is set for release at the end of January, when Eileen's critically lauded Shine Like It Does LP will be relaunched. Support for Eileen's Borderline gig on Monday, January 15, has been confirmed as Jont. Eileen's band that night will feature Kris, Iain and Mark Price (also of Del Amitri - he played drums on the EP), as well as Graham Henderson on keys (most recently seen in Karl Wallinger's band), with regulars David Bull and Barry Payne on guitar and bass respectively. Support for the show on the 22nd will be provided by the much-praised Swedish acoustic duo Kings Of Convenience, while Jessica Klein will appear on the 29th. On top of the great reviews in Mojo, Q, Uncut, the Sunday Times, the Guardian etc etc, Shine Like It Does was, last month, voted into Time Out's Top 10 Albums of 2000. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 17:12:31 -0000 From: hilary_gray@sandwich.pfizer.com Subject: OV: RE: More info Aaargh!!! And is Eileen Rose a potential support act for the next Del tour? I still can't believe Iain, Kris and Mark were all on stage in London and no-one from the list saw them......... Andrew and I had the "joy" of seeing her play support for Ryan Adams at The Borderline .... and well, she was, ahem, ..... not very good. Mind you this was just 2 acoustic guitars and not a proper band. She also did a cover of "Time" (Tom Waits if I remember correctly - most probably not!). And the crowd really did want to see Ryan! I have rung The Borderline: there are enough tickets left for people to turn up on the door next Monday she will have a backing band - but they can't confirm it will be all the people from last week. Soooooooooooooo ...... anyone fancy going along????? It's a brilliant venue - in a basement just off Charing Cross Road. Again I'm just amazed that JPR etc didn't let any of us know - we'd have all gone to give her a hearing (OK - I know some of us may have gone just to look at Iain's arms - no names mentioned!). Unless they don't want Dels fans going. Karen - thank you so much for finding this out - maybe some of us might get to see something - or have good fun in the process of trying! Tell everyone who reads the Evening Standard - but make sure no "active" fans find out about it!!! Great! I feel very annoyed about this. Do they really not want anyone to know what's going on? Surely this is good publicity and keeps the Del Amitri name alive. What scared me most is that the Standard wrote that Iain WAS in Del Amitri!!!! Any other band's management would let people know when band members are collaborating. I'm on lists for Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Squeeze/Glenn Tilbrook amongst others - and they always inform all and sundry if anyone is working with someone else. I don't know promotion; but wouldn't it make sense to start getting your name out BEFORE you spend all that money for promotion of a new album? Half of the band playing live, even in support of another artist, is VERY newsworthy. Even if just to fans! I know for a fact that if any of the band played anywhere near most of the people on this list, they would attend. That would be a ticket sold, supporting the artist that THEY were supporting.... I don't get it. Secret gigs are fine for people like Springsteen and McCartney (and they never are REALLY secret). If Iain and Kris really did produce this artist, why wouldn't THEY want to publicize it more widely? And what easier way than through the internet? One single email, could easily sell what... 30-40 tickets??? That's not worth an email? I'm really disappointed. Maybe the band really DOESN'T KNOW what JUST THIS MAILING LIST is capable of, promotion-wise??? I know there are people on this mailing list that are here, just for news of the music and tours. That's great! But, myself, I'm here to promote this band and their music. I've enjoyed my time spent with the guys, and I want to see them do well. I want to help. It's hard to help when they don't help themselves. More and more bands are turning to their fans to help promote and even SELL their cd's. The Push Stars and Josh Clayton-Felt come immediately to mind. Maybe it's time for an organized mass mailing to JPR. Or, maybe bypass them and go straight to Justin, saying "Let Us Help!" Ok. Unless all 5 band members are complete dolts (which I think many of us from personal experience can refute), my vote for blame for the band's lack of commercial success goes towards JPR's seeming management/promotion policy of "don't ask/don't tell". I do not think the guys in the band are even remotely aware of the past, present and future harm this "management team" has on their careers. I think many of us who've watched the band's career over the years have always tried to pin the blame on the big-bad record labels or the fickle buying public. Thing is (as I've said before), no record label - small or large - is going to automatically make a band/project a priority for promotional moneys and efforts just because they write pretty songs. to pull a quote from a recent INSIDE.com article - "In an age where more albums are being released than ever before and music is the engine that drives several multinational corporations, there are powerful incentives for record labels and artists to try and affect (their share of the promotional pie)". It takes a strong and asute - or at least COMMITTED - management effort to help the process along and keep the band's name and image 'out there'. The management company protects and promotes a band's/artists' interests, the assumption being that if due to their efforts the band are successful, the management company will in turn benefit. I think that's what pisses ME off the most - more and more it's becoming painfully obvious that JPR couldn't give a flying fuck about the future of Del Amitri. (pardon my French) I almost convinced myself they were merely stupid & inept; now it seems apparant they are criminally apathetic. Can't blame them for doing this work though - I'd have been more surprised if they sat around doing nothing all this time. Even if just to fans! HERE F(*&%N HERE!! I am back to you from the world of lurkers to say that I too am disgusted with the joke JPR is playing on us all and dressing it up as promotion. I have turned this one over and over in my head . . . playing devil's advocate and all. I say to myself "Kristy, maybe the management company wants to wait and spend the bulk of their promo budget on the band once the album is released and acually FRONT racked, not bargain binned." . . . "Kristy, you are RADIO. Maybe the management company has a great plan to blitz us all and make Del Amitri a household name." . . . "Kristy, the management company is biding their time! They'll have the band in cameos on all the best shows once the album comes out! Iain'll show on Emmerdale as a country farmer having a cold one in the pub, and Justin'll be on Coronation Street, wowin Manchester as Steve's NEW crooked business partner who falls for Liz who'll leave Jim yet AGAIN, then the band'll wow the street with a concert at the the annual Halloween festival. There is a plan." . . . Oh, sorry, was that me HALLUCINATING?????? For all of you that are CONNECTED, here's a bug that I'd like to set on someone STINGING! I'm in the middle of a career change anyway. I want to put my heart into something I love. If JPR wants to pick a slightly used, temporarily rumpled but eternally cute Canadian to get things right, I am sooooo volunteering - well, applying. I'd need a salary. I would love the oppurtunity to travel the U.K. (for starters) hitting radio stations and promote the band. Then maybe I'd light a fire and get them playing a few live gigs - it seems like the only way that I'll ever get to see them! I'd start the ball rolling on a connection between the band and the fan club, the websites and OV!! I'd get a budget for prizes and merchandise, and I'd see if I could persuade the band to issue a NEW and IMPROVED version of Lousy for all who have written with the b-sides in mind. My plan culminates in getting lucky - Wink! - but that can wait - I have a plan!!! I'd love to get up close and personal with ANYONE Scottish . . . that accent turns me to Jello. Too much information? Yes, I am absolutely serious. I would up and move for the chance to promote a product we all believe in. I'm so sick and tired of complaining about the problem - I just want to fix it! I have half a mind to draw up a C.V. and send it on over. Just promise me when I move that there won't be a crazed african man on my B.A. flight trying to crash us into the Atlantic. On a slightly lighter note, it is great to think that there will be a new album at some point this year. Any ideas on cover art? I'd have to hear the songs to get an idea of the tone, but a few well placed artsy photo's would be great - and a fabaroo piece of artwork smack on the front cover, much like Duran did with Rio. Susan, I would like to publicly tell you that I think your artwork is amazing. I saw your page and it really made me proud. You know how to capture soul in colour, and that is something I've never been able to do. Kudos and cheers from north of the 49th.
