All bands treat their fans differently, my other favourite bands (Rush and Dream Theater) couldn't be further apart in terms of how they treat their fans. Dream Theater release a special fan club CD every year, play special fan club shows and are very involved with the fans. Rush have been on a hiatus for four years and before from Geddy Lee's solo album released last year (it's a great album!) we hardly heard a peep from the band, although they have said that they are spoiled by the loyal support they have from the fans both sides realise that the band does things there way and and always will but they have never messed around with the fans. I just think that DA could do a little more sometimes, releasing a limited edition CD months after it comes out is not on, why not release it at the same time? Alright...been looking over the postings this past week(s)....anyone got the cajones to either forward these/print out hard copies and mail these to JPR (since there is some doubt as to their tech status at times...) AND the boys in the band? What everyone has said these past weeks is really no different than what the 'older' OVer's have been saying for the past 2-3 years. Yes, there have been extenuating circumstances to excuse the hold-up of the CD with the A&M/Polygram/UMG turnover, etc. but as I've said all along, I find it hard not to put the blame squarely on their management's shoulders - especially now that an album is almost finished. JPR have to be one of the lamest, most short-sighted, market-ignorant excuse for a management team I've ever encountered in my 12+ years in the business. The band may hold some responsibility in this, but ultimately it is their job to MAKE the music and be available to promote it - they PAY their management company upwards of 20% of their take (fees/royalties/endorsements/etc.) to "manage" the business end of things - and the business end of things means making certain the CD sells - whether to old fans or new ones. If anything, the band has surreptitiously kept us much more informed (thru Kevin) of their progress on the CD than JPR has even attempted to this past year - even after much prodding. So, I'm not convinced that the band are the key to this problem. If anything, I personally believe they are being kept fairly ignorant of the opportunities that are available to them. JPR has consistently ignored and at times scoffed at the viability of web-based music promotion - but ain't it funny how much bigger-selling artists (Blur, Radiohead, Madonna, even David Gray) are making solid & proper (and successful) use of the Internet and other new-media technologies to promote their new music FOR A LOWER COST than more traditional touring and radio-heavy promotion? Recently I caught a baby band at a local club here in town and was blown away by their live show as well as the fact that half the city's music press/promo/label people were in attendance checking out this currently unsigned band. So, the next morning I went online to see what they had out there. As there was no link to UBL or other artist-related portals, I was reduced to trying a megasearch which led me to their mailing list, linked to their website. The site was good & informative, but I couldn't help myself from sending the band (all members), their management company and booking agent a short e-mail saying "great gig, love the CD, but isn't it defeatist promotionally to make your website so hard to find, etc.?" Within 10 hours I got an e-mail back from 3 of the musicians thanking me and saying they'd check on it and 4 hours later I received a very long e-mail from their management team (cc:ing the band, of course) saying that they would get right on the task of fixing that promotional oversight, etc. and offering me a free CD and free passes to the next gig. What I'm trying to say is that if the Dels WERE aware of the current and potential damage to their fanbase by JPR's actions (or lack thereof), we might be seeing a few more changes than we are. Just my opinion. This gets more and more frustrating as the days wear on without a single word from JPR. But I guess we've come to expect it, no matter what bad taste it leaves in our mouths. One of my favorite bands, Funland (who are not still together), did a medley of those two Air Supply songs and I loved it, too. Although I liked them, I wasn't that much into Air Supply in their heyday, but my sister had those two singles (45s back then) and maybe others, too. > > And I'm a frequent ABBA listener. Now that's a damn shame. I liked the Partridge Family, too, and did actually go back and buy a best of CD a few years ago. We're allowed to be nostalgic (those of us who were around back then) or if you want to get into music from before you were born, who's to say that's an unworthy thing? Remember when Jane posted that web site where you could see what was the number one song on the week you were born? Curiousity got the better of me and I went back and bought a CD with the song that was one of my number ones (forgot if it was the UK or US one) and I did end up remembering "Groovin'" by the Rascals. > > But hey...we all gotta like something, right? > > Leah > Yep, we all gotta like something, so you just go on and listen to what you like and don't worry what anyone else says. :-) debbie Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
