I was happy to see Steely Dan get a few nods in some of the bigger categories. I haven't gotten their new one, "Two Against Nature", yet (I'm notoriously slow when it comes to getting new albums with only a few exceptions). I've got just about everything else of theirs and have been lucky enough to catch them live once. I'll be pulling for them. Also happy to see Don Henley get a couple of noms. His new album is a good one (I have heard that one). And while Mr. Henley likes to get on his high horse quite a bit, he does put out some good stuff. Have to agree with everybody's sentiments regarding the Grammies, tho. It has become a farce. At least the broadcast and the awards presented during it are. There are a lot of good awards and artists that go unrecognized except for a "presented in earlier ceremonies" 30 second clip right before Christina Aguiliera takes the stage. Happy New Year - hope you all had an excellent Hogmanay! The last song I heard last year was Twist and Shout by Deacon Blue - another great Scottish band that people tend to ignore or forget about - and the first was Coldplay's Yellow. May the new year bring you everything you wish yourselves. Two very fine songs by very fine bands. Talking of Coldplay - they performed Yellow, Trouble and another song from Parachutes on Jools Holland's Hootenanny on New Year's Eve. To me they were one of the highlights of that show (which I taped - being otherwise occupied!) along with Gary Brooker (with whom I saw the New Year in, in the flesh). I saw Deacon Blue a few years ago at Reading Festival, but they were bottled off the stage. Such a shame as they were one of the bands I'd gone to see specifically. I also saw Ricky Ross doing a solo stint at Bracknell Festival recently. He was good - but I think he needed a band behind him. But I agree with your statement Dawn about them being another great, but ignored, Scottish band. On another tack, I think I've made some new converts. I played the Dels to a couple of girls from the States who'd come over to see Eric Clapton, and they loved them. Gini has gone out and bought HoR and kept saying to me she couldn't understand why they weren't huge in the States, and why they're not played more often. Well we've been saying that for years! Hilary was listening when Russ Williams played Nothing Ever Happens at 165 and he commented what a great band and great song it way. Well we all know he's a huge fan anyway. The Dels entries are: 165 Nothing Ever Happens 197 Roll To Me 467 Always The Last To Know (may have been more - I'm being constantly interrupted by the kids and may have missed a few) Top 10: 10 The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony 9 Beatles - Yesterday 8 Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven 7 Derek & The Dominoes - Layla 6 Eagles - Hotel California 5 Beatles - Hey Jude 4 Robbie Williams - Angels 3 John Lennon - Imagine 2 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody 1 Beatles - Let It Be No real surprises there - especially in wake of the release of the new Beatles CD. The top 50 seems full of Beatles, Police and Robbie Williams and you can see the full chart at http://www.virginradio.co.uk/onair/top500/top500.html Jane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 18:17:42 -0500 (EST) From: Mitch Subject: Re: OV: Re: Grammies > categories.
