I can with Change Everything and Twisted, but AFter Medicine on SOSP, I'm just holding on for Life is Full. I love the beginning, and the latter songs are starting to grow on me, but I always just want to skip ahead. And also, though I like lots of the songs on SOSP, only 2 are *extreme* favorites of mine (What I think she sees, and Life is Full, which I once listened to for over an hour and a half on repeat in my car). Twisted and Change Everything both have at least four, and though Waking hours only has 2, they are the absolute top two. Or maybe it's just because Justin looks so horrible on SOSP promotion stuff. The twisted era gave him marvelous hair and there's just something really endearing about him cutting it before Hatful... I'm gonna stop and just go watch the video now... I don't know where you were for Roll To Me, but I think A&M AND the Dels did a damn fine job of jamming that song down the throats of the public. It's the only time... but they did it once, and look what it did! They had a high concept video (!)... They crossed the US 3 times... They appeared on any TV program that'd have them... They visited most every radio station in every city they visited... Now, when you compare that to the push behind SOSP... there's no comparison. A&M even delivered them to the wrong building for a radio appearance! And left them there!! I think the writing was in the sand at the kick off US show in downtown Chicago, when they couldn't keep the power on long enough to do a mini-concert! Justin was reduced to tap dancing to entertain the crowd. As for videos, (my particular beef) Kiss This Thing Goodbye (US version), Always The Last To Know, Be My Downfall, Roll To Me, Driving With The Brakes On, and yes, I've given in to Here and Now, and yes, I still like Medicine. These are the only videos out of 17 that aren't laboring under boredom. That's less than half. Another thing to think about is, Del Amitri is in fact GETTING OLDER. Not that many 36 year olds starring on MTV and VH1 these days! And something that I'm starting to believe; the band doesn't want to be Pearl Jam. They want to play *their* music for the people who love it, and just make a living at it. I'm beginning to think they're happy where they are. I wish they were happier releasing more product, but that's just me. Kristy In Canada, if you want, you can get a job at a station here in town. They play Dels... when I beg. They even did a Del Amitri "4 Pack" one evening for me. They don't have TOTAL control over what's played on their shifts, but they do have input. Peace, Darren ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 14:43:21 -0700 From: Kristy McDonald Subject: Re: OV: sosp Hey Elisabeth! Hey all! Okay - I have to get down with this touring thing. I've seen post after post complain about the lack of live Del. Y'know . . . being on the front lines and seeing how cheap radio stations are, I imagine that record companies are NO different. To paraphrase Courtney Love, it goes something like this . . . . . . a band - and we'll name them Del Amitri just for the hell of it - is signed and then fronted x-amount of money. That amount is a LOAN. Del then has to book a studio, engineer and producer. They have to provide an allowance or salary for themselves and anyone they hire as "staff". They have to tour and pay for MORE STAFF. Assume the album sells like say . . . a Heart album in the 80's or early 90's. Sales are great, but the return for Del isn't. Out of the money made by the tour and CD's, the prod. costs have to be paid (CD's, liners, cases, tour equipment etc.). By the time the record company gets their cut and the boys get their "royalties", they're lucky if they break even. It SUCKS! Now imagine that you have a great album, but your record company would rather support Britney or Christina or Mark Anthony or Ricky Martin simply because they happen to be this month's flavour. The record company has a vested interest in promoting you because the better YOU do, the better THEY do. The shame here is that they (rec. co.) has sunk all of their eggs in one entertainer and left you behind. This sounds like a Del story to me. Just think where they could be if Kiss This Thing Goodbye was promoted PROPERLY! Same goes for Roll to Me and The Last to Know. I'll tell you - I have seen every video from Pearl Jam (not because I wanted to), but Roll to Me is the only Del video I have ever laid eyes on! The other issue that chokes my chicken is that radio stations are programmed based on what a music director likes, no matter what b.s. they throw at you. I've seen this first hand. The Corrs have a great tune out and I don't play it a) because the boss hasn't given it a chance, and b) the big stations in BIGGER cities don't play it! Do you see the catch 22? Big City MD isn't programming Del because he doesn't dig 'em. Because of that, smaller markets don't program them either! I would be the first in line to throw down the gauntlet and go to work for Del as hard as I could because I believe in them. I think that may just be the ticket . . . they need people who believe in them. If U2 can make a comeback this year, then there is certainly room for the boys. I for one will let them stay at my house FREE to save them money next time they come to town. Oh, sorry . . . was that the sound of Hell freezing over? Hmmmmm . . . . I for one can't wait for the album. Regardless of the label they land on, and regardless of how hard they tour, I'll have the album and I'll love it. I'll love it just because. Del Amitri is like that really comfy pair of jammies you have . . . you just love to curl up with them . . . ; ) I really would work for them, you know! But then, wouldn't we all. Kristy in Canada P.S. - What a coinky-dink. U2 is on MuchMusic as I write this with the new tune. No disrespect to Bono (I love him!), but based on the new U2 single . . . Del Amitri could kick their ASSSS!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 18:12:03 -0500 From: Leah D Schenkenberg Subject: Re: OV: sosp They play Breathless a lot in Minneapolis...partially because they had to replace Beth Hart as the opener for Bare Naked Ladies, but they always advertise them as a "European band that has sold 14 million world wide". They visited most every radio station in every city they visited... Actually, I was living quite literally in the middle of nowhere - a small town (4000 people) called Smithers. I DID watch Muchmusic (our MTV) and to be truthful, I do remember Roll to Me. I can HONESTLY say that is is the only Del video I have ever seen and my life is the worse for it!! I missed the appearances, although I do remember a tour, and since I was 15 hours away from Vancouver by car, I was hooped. Again, I AM the worse for it!! : ) > Another thing to think about is, Del Amitri is in fact GETTING OLDER. Not > that many 36 year olds starring on MTV and VH1 these days! This is true . . . although Sheryl Crow, Duran, Henley, Bryan Adams and Bowie are all on Much. True, they're established and rich, but the old guys are out there. I have two words - ROLLING STONES (ugh, that hurt!). > And something that I'm starting to believe; the band doesn't want to be Pearl > Jam. In the meantime, I do believe the music is the most important part of what they do. I couldn't care less if there were TEN years between albums. I feel that their songs are truly timeless and I'll never get tired of them. > Kristy In Canada, if you want, you can get a job at a station here in town. > They play Dels... when I beg. They even did a Del Amitri "4 Pack" one > evening for me. They don't have TOTAL control over what's played on their > shifts, but they do have input. I BEG you to get me a job there. No joke . . . I have to play exactly what is given me (spit out by a computer) - NO deviations. It kinda sucks. But then, we also have hit to non hit ratios and something called "canadian content". This rule states that we have to play 35% c.c. meaning it's written, produced and recorded in Canada and recorded BY a Canadian. If the Dels were Canadian, they'd be played for sure! These are the only videos out of 17 that aren't laboring under > boredom. That's less than half. I was wondering.....are the music videos available for sale anywhere? The reason I ask is that I don't have cable (don't have enough time to watch public channels much less ones you have to pay for whether you watch them or not), so needless to say I don't watch MTV or VH1. The only videos I've seen are the ones on "Let's Go Home" and I saw one once a LONG time ago at my sister's apartment, which would have been probably "Waking Hours" or possibly "Change Everything" era. I feel like I might be missing out a bit on what it is you guys talk about in the videos. > > Another thing to think about is, Del Amitri is in fact GETTING OLDER. I wish they were happier releasing more product, but that's just me. Amen, brother! I've probably told this story before, so if so, forgive me, but the first time I met Justin while we were chatting a girl came up and asked for his autograph "for when you get famous". I didn't hestiate to chastize her by telling her to "enjoy it NOW!" Personally, it doesn't change my opinion of them one way or the other if they're famous or not. If no-one else in the world had ever heard of them, if the guys were just playing for me in my living room, or whether they were playing to a packed house, the fact remains the same that I love the music. I'd venture to say that everyone on the list makes up their own mind about music and doesn't need any sort of chart to tell them what's good music and what's not, especially since we see with all the crap on there now how bad that chart lies! Now about the playing their music for the people who love it........BRING IT ON BOYS! Have a great week! debbie ------------------------------ End of oppositeview-digest V2 #107 **********************************
