One single-liner that I first noticed (which, I must admit, is more funny than fragile), was; "you've been seeing SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05" Also, I enjoy this one; "And when faced with temptation you know a man should stand and fight - But you will be my downfall tonight" from "Change Everything". However, my all-time favourite - for its suicidal intricacies, no doubt - must be "One Thing Left To Do" in its entirity. I love the way the song starts out as a lamenting goodbye, some poor fellow (or girl) asking a departed lover's forgiveness for her/his inadequacies, with a continuous, brittle falsetto echo of "I'd die for you", and then, in the final line, you realise that this is exactly what the person in question is about to ensure. Painting such a powerful picture of a love this strong (or an ego this weak, or both of the above) speaks volumes of JC's capacities as a lyricist. He did it once before, too, on "The First Rule Of Love", which contains some of the same elements, but having to choose a favourite, "One Thing Left To Do" wins by a razorblade's width. Now, let somebody bring on a happy line before I bring everybody into a deep, deep depression here... ;-) Espen Kvalheim CEO Repliq www.repliq.net - ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Fuller To: OV Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2000 7:00 AM Subject: OV: Round Up > My favourite line is from 'Always the last to know" (from the best Del > album -Change everything) > > "Although we share the same city and feel the same sun, when your winter > comes I'll be the last to know" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 11:51:00 +0100 From: Helen Pickering Subject: OV: RE: Re: Round Up > Now, let somebody bring on a happy line before I bring everybody into a > deep, deep depression here... ;-) > OK, how about: "Well come on down we're waiting for you, we've got a special evening planned" (Drowned on dry land) or.. But for me, I LOVE these lines not only because of their content, but also because of their sound: something about the "P"s and "L"s. What can I say? I'm weird. One of my favorite lines in performance is from Opposite View (oooh I love to hear JC sing this): Stay in and get wet [beat] with you. And also, from It Might as Well Be You: By the light of cigarettes, we introduce ourselves in ways you don't forget. And, just about any line from Evidence, but the one that comes to mind right now: Like smoke from factories, we leave our heat behind. I know there are a bunch more, but I'm blanking. And, I've got to get back to work. I do like this topic, though. But wouldn't a true atheist think it impossible to talk to Him at all and so not express it as a choice of action in this circumstance? This is absolutely one of my favorite songs, and to me epitomizes the anger and frustration felt when life doesn't turn out like you want it to. That's classic human nature, to get really mad and pissed off and to turn away from God and salvation and it all. Justin expresses it well. Lots of people choose the hangover... but He's just waiting for the moment when they choose to look up instead.
