The first song I remember being infatuated with was "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree" I believe by Captain and Tenille(sp?). I was about 4 and was fascinated enough that I figured out how to operate the record player. I played that stupid song over and over again until my mother came out very unhappily and told me to "turn that damn thing off!" It was about 6 o'clock in the morning. Anyway, as for driving music, right now the only thing I'm listening to is the new one from XTC -- "WASP STAR." I don't know if many of you are into this band but in my opinion they are the bees knees. It's the best album I've heard so far this year. Well, I'm sorry to hear that we have a while to wait for the new Dels. I know this is probably old hat for the rest of you, but what was the general consensus on Some Other Sucker's Parade? While enjoyable, I felt it wasn't up to the standard that I had become used to from them. I hope this long hiatus finds them recharged and ready to put out some more masterpieces. Their Joy to the World is a good one to drive to also. Lauree in Tempe ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2000 14:27:15 -0400 From: "Susan & C. About a million years ago when I was a teenager, one of the fun ministries at our church was puppets; about 8 of us kids would write some of our own skits or use current Christian songs or Muppet songs from the tv show. We'd practice, and put on puppet shows for church events, local Boy & Girl Scout groups, etc. My most memorable moment was when during a rocking number, my puppet's wig went flying off into the front row of children (my son remembers this because he was in the front row & saw it all!) So since those days of puppeteering, I've been a fan of Jim Henson and the Muppets. We watched a bit of the Sesame Street show too when my babies were young of course; I always looked forward to guest appearances by pop stars like James Taylor, or Jeremy Irons & Danny DeVito & Madeline Kahn all singing "You Gotta Put Down the Duckie". Ok, before I get a scolding for not enough Dels content, I have a request should any of you in-the-know types run into the band and find them searching for that one cool cover to put on the new album: after hearing the Dels version of "Get Down Tonight" I want them to try Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love"! Can't you just imagine it, with Andy doing that speaking part at the beginning?! Let's hope my voice hasn't been cyber-squashed. To Brett - XTC rocks (Dear God was my FAVE!!. Y'like World Party? And "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was Tony Orlando and Dawn . . . that was a Rock 'n' Roll Jeopardy question not too long ago. Re : The Muppets . . . Oscar's BEST song ever was "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella", and the "Ma Na Ma Na" song was one of the funniest skits ever!! I have a Muppets book somewhere that outlines every last one of the Muppet Shows. Next to Mork and Mindy, that's a show I think should be aired on a regular basis. Alright, simply because I absolutely CANNOT keep my yap shut, I'm going to tell all of you MY favourite driving tunes. I'm used to LONG drives to and from work ( up to 3 hours round trip), or long highway drives to see friends, so I love my 10 CD stacker. The Tragically Hip - Fully Completely (full CD) R.E.M. - Automatic for the People/Green (full CD's) Del - Hatful of Rain (full CD 'cause it has MOST of my fave's) - but my favourite song is Kiss this thing goodbye. Talk about getting up past 100 in a hurry! (that's kilometeres - I'm Canadian.) Eddie Money - Peace in Our Time (single) The Outfield - For You (single) Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson - Candy (single) The B-52's - Bouncing off the Sattellites (full CD) Duran Duran - The Wedding Album (full CD) Talking Heads - And She Was (single) Tal Bachman - She's So High (single, but the CD is awesome) Sass Jordan - Make You a Believer (single) The Black Crowes - Jealous Again and Twice as Hard (singles) S.R.V. - The House is Rockin' (single) Robbie Williams - Millenium (single) Geri Hallowell - Mi Chico Latino, Lift Me Up and Let Me Love You (singles) Scandal - The Warrior (single) Chantal Kreviazuk - Surrounded (single) The Northern Pikes - Big Blue Sky and Snow in June (full CD's) Kim Mitchell - Shakin' Like a Human Being (full CD) ANYTHING from the Beatles Barenaked Ladies - Gordon (full CD) Barney Bentall and the Legendry Hearts - Greatest Hits (full CD) Blue Rodeo - Outskirts (full CD) ***If you're a Blue Rodeo fan, we have a new double live CD here in Canada called Just Like a Vacation, and it's two hours of heaven! And that's about it - for now! Cheers! Now it is my turn to come out of the wood work. As a true child of the 80s, my first albums were Business As Usual by Men at Work and Too Low for Zero by Elton John (I still think they are both classics too!). The very first record in my possession (actually my younger brother's) was a charming little ditty called I Wanna Be a Punk Rocker by Billy Connolly (anyone remember THAT??). This was provided by an all too willing Uncle along with a wind-up record player. My brother "amused" us to distraction turning the speed down at the memorable line "I'll **** my nose and dip it in my coffee". Excellent stuff! As for driving music, I can't believe no-one has mentioned Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty). Living in the Big Smog of Tokyo, where a car is a liability, I haven't done a lot of driving myself of late. Back in Melbourne I did love to listen to Rod Stewart's Best Of tape when driving home at midnight after a 12 hour shift. It brought more than a tear or two to this exile's eyes! If I had to choose a Dels disc for driving it would have to be Hatful of Rain. Better to sing along at the wheel than to want to read along with the lyrics!
