Ed ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 09:54:01 EDT From: Shevale@aol.com Subject: OV: Re: Tito Puente/Monkees (virtually no dels content) Re: Senor Puente Several years ago, I was in a Spanish restaurant in the West 50s in NYC. Our appetizers had just been delivered to our table, and my date and I were starved, as we had been hiking all over the city that day. In one of those weird synchronicitous (is this a word?) moments, Tito Puente was playing on the PA system, the restaurant doors opened, a large group of people came in, and everyone in the restaurant started chanting, "TI-To, Ti-to..." Puente was tickled that he could hear his music and his fans chanting, and he made his way around to every table in the place. He chatted and gave out little pins of the Puerto Rican flag. The music changed to a different mambo just as Tito came to our table. He offered me his hand and, even though I'm a miserable dancer, I could not resist. There in that little restaurant we danced my first mambo. When it was over he thanked me, hugged me, and bowed. What a sweet and gentle man, in addition to being an extraordinary percussionist. What a loss to latin music. On a lighter note, the Monkees are definitely among my "guilty pleasures." Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith, however, were the two who caught my eye. And, on a road trip to Toronto to see the BoDeans, several moons ago, Daydream Believer was on a mixed tape that we listened to on a continuous loop. It is definitely a driving song! Too bad that those of you in the UK never got to see the Brady Bunch episode where Davy Jones takes Marcia to her school dance (or something like that. Brady Bunch aficionados correct me if I'm wrong). And, on a dels note, could I'm an Unbeliever be about atheism or organized religion? Or is another song in his oeuvre, a tune about a failed relationship? Finally, picking up on something that Jane wrote, what was the first record that you ever bought? Jane's already chimed in with Daydream believer. I'm about to embarrass myself, here. Everyone ready. The first time I ever bought a record for myself, I actually bought two: Bobby Sherman singing Easy Come, Easy Go, and The Partridge Family (whom I still listen to, can you believe?) singing I Think I Love You. Anyone? Anyone? As some of you know, I am terribly star struck. So, I'll have to share two of my recent celebrity sightings: David Duchovny, who does resemble Justin, but who, in real life, is much thinner than I imagined; and Mark Morris, a modern dance choreographer whose work I adore, but whom nobody I know seems to care much about. Morris was a doll and chatted with me for nearly a half hour as we got our coffee in a local deli. Sad to say, it made my day. Have I sufficiently humiliated myself? Back to the cage. As far as my creaking memory serves me the first album I owned (as in given to me) was ..... no sniggering at the back ...... by David Soul!!! I can't imagine why people thought that as I loved Starsky and Hutch this would make me approciate his singing voice! I think the first one I bought myself was Outlandos D'Amour by The Police (still scarred by Be My Girl Sally - a man singing about his blow- up doll) followed by Rock n Roll Juvenile by Cliff Richard (no chance of being shocked like that on there!). This is definitely a guilty pleasure! Bear in mind I was approximately 9 to 10-ish! And I can't remember the first single I bought - I'm more of an album person. Off to hang my head in shame for having even more embarrassing admissions than Jane and Sherry :-) Libby On Fri, 2 Jun 2000 Shevale@aol.com wrote: > Finally, picking up on something that Jane wrote, what was the first record > that you ever bought? I especially love One of those Nights and their version of Cherish, which I think is really great. I listen to them all the time.... Here's a few questions for some of you people, because you always seem to know everything. Why aren't bands ever 4 members? I know there are some out there, but it seems that virtually all of them are either 3 members or 5. Any particular reason? And also, what is that Phil Collins/Genesis song "She seems do do do do do dododo do". I can't catch the words, and though usually I'm not embarassed to call in and ask the radio station, I can't see myself having to call my station and sing the tune since I'm virtually clueless as to what the words are. The only "She seems . . " song I can think of by Phil /Genesis is "She seems to have an invisible touch, yeah . ." which, I think, is called "Invisible Touch." I could be way off on this, but that's what pops into my mind with your only clue "She seems . ." Hmmm . . well I can tell you that I have a photo taken about 5 or 6 yrs ago by my father-in-law (there's a story behind this which I won't go into now) of Davy and my husband's sister. It's a close-up and Davy still looks pretty good, older of course, but still that same old Monkee ;>) Getting back to Jane's Daydream Believer comments (and I had a mad crush on Davy, too!), I remember playing that beginning bit, where he speaks, "Okay, okay . . don't get so excited.
