(I actually came across this one - I was working with a young lad and Stairway came on the radio - the Led Zep version - and this lad said "Wow - that's a bit different from the original" Cringe! ) Talking of Led Zep - I recently had their Remasters CD in my car - now THAT's driving music. Especially Kashmir (although the sound of Robert Plant's voice makes strange things happen to me - so I have to be careful) I also love Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper, and had it on repeat play once in the car for about 15 times. I agree with Leah about Squeeze's Tempted - got that in my car right now. This Side of the Morning is great to drive to - as I love singing that one at the top of my voice - especially if I'm doing a ton along the motorway at 2am. (Me?Speeding?) Kiss This Thing Goodbye, Start With Me and Being Somebody Else are great adrenalin pumpers. I also love listening to the Devlins Alone In The Dark - cranked up high - whilst driving in the dark. I've also got both the Picture House albums in my car at the moment - Fan Club is a great song for driving - and also Jade - another one I can sing to. But my current top fave driving song is their song Heavenly Day. Other Driving Faves (as included on a tape I put together a few years back precisely for that) are Sweet Home Alabama - Allman Brothers Tunnel of Love - Dire Straits Bell Bottom Blues - Derek and the Dominoes Sledge Hammer - Peter Gabriel Kiss From A Rose - Seal Here Comes The Night - Them Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (yes, another Sting/Police fan here) Have You Ever Loved A Woman - Eric Clapton Karn Evil 9 (1st,, 2nd and 3rd Impressions) - Emerson Lake and Palmer Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who Telegraph Road - Dire Straits Animal - Def Leppard Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears Soweto Trembles - Alias Ron Kavana Medley: Galtee Mor/Irish Ways/Jigs - Alias Ron Kavana Oops! Rather a long list - and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Mind you - most of these are adrenalin pumpers - so I do have to try to remember to put some slow ones on for town driving! The sort which put butterflies in my stomach and slow me right down. When You Were Young and One Thing Left To Do fit the bill. Hmmmm . . . Leah's right - what is the world coming to?? When we got home, Steve immediately went to the vinyl to put on Bob Seger to which our son said, "Well, I guess it's *okay.*" Jane wrote: > Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who Oh yeah . . this is a drivin' song I remember from back when I first started driving!! As I was cranking out "Love Bites" and singing at the top of my lungs, I thought to myself, "Oh! I forgot about this one for OV." ;>) I also like "Spit in the Rain" for driving, which I love to sing along to and turn up loud. Cindy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 09:29:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Andrew Metz Subject: OV: Drivin' Muzak Picture this: you're standing by the side of the highway on a dark and stormy night, bags by your side, holding your thumb out in the off chance that one of the few drivers out on this ugly night will give you a ride home. Eighteen-wheelers roar past, spraying you with water, and you're just about to call it a night and check into the nearest Motel Six to the exit ramp when a white blur approaches, wheels spinning. It slows down, eventually coming to a stop about ten feet ahead of you. An old white Mercedes sedan. You grab your bags and run up. The driver pops the trunk, and as you load your bags, you notice a big subwoofer, a shiny amplifier, and a twelve-disc CD changer bolted to the floor of the trunk. Probably a pimp or a drug dealer, you're thinking. You open the passenger-side door, mutter a thanks, and look at the driver. To your surprise, it's a ratty-looking kid. About nineteen or twenty, you reckon. Bulbous nose, heavy acne scarring, fine, thinning dark brown hair, with the slightest hint of blond. Black leather biker jacket, epaulets and all. You sit down on plush sheepskin, and you notice that the entire interior of this spacious car is decked out in the material. Definitely a wanna-be circa-1970s era pimp. Rich parents probably payed for the car. You settle in, and the kid pops the car into drive and pulls back onto the highway. Then he speaks, and you immediately plug him as a New Yorker. "Okay, there are only two rules when you're riding with me," he says, and he sounds amiable enough. "First thing, don't distract me while I'm driving if you want to get where you're going in one piece. Second, I choose the music, no discussion. Anything else goes. Mainline smack, get on the phone to your broker and start trading millions in bonds, practice your Farsi, I don't care. Touch the stereo and you lose the ride." Well, your prayers immediately turn towards hoping that this guy isn't an aspiring Broadway actor addicted to showtunes. And as you start wondering, he hits the play button on the in-deck CD player. Golden Earring. "Radar Love." The forgotten Dutch rockers sing "Brenda Lee's coming on strong..." And you blink. Okay, what else will he hit me with? Your questions are answered on the long drive home. After Golden Earring, he hits a button, and on comes some FAST guitar. "Jimmy Eat World," he says. "Song's called 'Rockstar.'" He cranks the volume up a few notches on an already loud setting. No distortion from the speakers, surprisingly. After that, a song you recognize. Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer," the Stop Making Sense version. Then some weird techno-chanting thing that he tries to introduce, but it sounds like he's trying to say that it's a deep forest in Peter Gabriel, While The Earth Sleeps. Hmm. Time for more techno, first up, Moby doing "Everytime You Touch Me," and Lords of Acid doing "The Real Thing." Gear shift! Some hippie folkie guitarist comes on, and he tells you that this is John McCutcheon. You wonder if he's related to Martine as he sings "My name is Frances Tolliver, I come from Liverpool..." Then it's the most famous Liverpudlians ever, doing "Revolution." After John, Paul, George, and Ringo finish that one up, and before they can go on to "Honey Pie," it's back to the buttons and some song with a guy howling about "food for songs." The driver tries to tell you the name of the band over the music, but you hear him say something like Bell A Meat Tree. And that's just ridiculous. And it goes on like this, for how long, you don't know, until he pulls up to your street as Janis Joplin sings Kris Kristofferson's song about Bob Dylan. Freedom really IS just another word for nothing left to lose, man. That is so right. And the stereo segues into someone singing about rolling dice as he pulls up to your apartment. But it's not the Rolling Stones, the kid tells you as you grab your bags. This is Delbert McClinton. What a name to be saddled with, you think as you close the trunk, yell a thanks to the kid behind the wheel, and pray that you never get picked up by him again. And the Stones DO come on as the Mercedes rolls the the end of your street in the light rain. "Saint Paul the Persecutor was a cruel and sinful man, Jesus hit him with a blinding light and then his life began," drifts over to you as you unlock your door, walk inside, and the car turns the corner into darkness. -Andrew Metz RESURGAM "Life is so good in the US of A Live out your dreams in Ameriki If you've got the guts and the bucks it is said, Every man is a king in the US of A Every man is a king in Ameriki..." -Ron Kavana, "Everyman Is A King (In the US of A)" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 09:33:15 -0500 From: "S Meyer" Subject: OV: Re: Drivin' Muzak I'm SO glad you've come out of delurk mode . . . .; > D Cindy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 09:37:40 -0500 From: "S Meyer" Subject: OV: PS to Andrew's Drivin' Muzak I'm grabbin' that Radar Love CD as I'm heading out the door now . . . ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 15:49:34 +0100 () From: Libby Graham Subject: Re: OV: Re: Drivin' Muzak Miracles will never cease - Andrew's posted again! We had gradually become fans over the years going to 2 local concerts and the Royal Albert Hall (still remember vividly all those people arriving late and missing the accoustic session!). Then the computer arrived and we found Alison's site followed by Kevins. Well thanks to that we arrived at TFI Friday and met Kevin, Libby, Hilary, Caroline, Yvonne and Adam. We had a fabulous time and Libby and Hilary pursuaded us to join OV. If anyone knows Adam's whereabouts would love to know as he took a picture of us all standing next to Iain and we haven't seen him since! (and we want a copy). Considering that DCHTS was followed by CTBF, we have not exactly had much new material in the last 2 years!!! Roll on the new album and all the b sides spin offs.
