McNamara" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 22 Oct 2015 14:38:26 +0000 From: "Susan E. McNamara" Subject: Joni's Birthday Card Instructions Dear JMDL, I have heard all the ideas about what we want to send Joni for her birthday coming up on November 7. The first decision is that we are agreed that a photo montage of beautiful places, some with photos of us, and some without, would be enjoyable to Joni. I also think the idea of places that relate to where she has performed or where her songs were written about is a good idea. Also, I think Jamie's wonderful offer to place a video he creates with the photos on a digital frame (that he will donate) is really generous and will make a big impact. So with that, please follow these instructions if you want to participate in this project: 1. Send a jpg photo and a message to Joni to my email at sem8@cornell.edu and copy Jamie's email at JamieZubairi@gmail.com by Friday, October 23 (Yes that's tomorrow!). Large files should be sent via www.hightail.com 2. Make sure that the photo is in LANDSCAPE format as it will be viewed on a computer screen. The size of the photo should be no bigger than 5Mb. Please frame yourself to one side of the frame (nothing dead center). There should be space on one side of the picture so your face appears either to the left or to the right hand side of the picture - this will ensure that there will be enough space for your message to appear alongside your face and not written all over it. Short and sweet is best. Please make sure the message is less than 150 characters (or it will be edited). Also please ensure that the background isn't distracting, otherwise the words may not be read clearly. Please see this photo as a reference: http://jamiezubairi.com/?attachment_id=166 . Jamie will add the message to the photograph so you don't have to. The photos may be given the same 'retouching' treatment to unify the look of the video. We know how Joni loves a good transition! 3. If you're sending a short video message, please make sure you film it in landscape (if you're using a smartphone, hold it on its side. Again, short and sweet, the message should only be 3-6 seconds long i.e. "Happy Birthday Joni, I'm so glad to hear you're getting better, love from Jamie Zubairi in London" is 5 seconds. But the video you send could be slightly longer either side of the message portion in order that I have 'editing space'. Send via www.hightail.com 4. If you're sending an audio message, similarly, short and sweet and an MP3 format, no more than 5 seconds long, similarly with a few seconds silence either side of the spoken portion for editing space. Best place to record? A room full of soft furnishings so there's no bounce. A room full of Chippendale would not be good. Send via www.hightail.com 5. If you are sending a photo of a place that relates to a place where she performed, please indicate that in your message. If it relates to a song, mention the song name, or a lyric ... for example, "I pulled off into the forest, crickets clicking in the ferns ..." Happy Birthday from Ithaca, NY, Love, Sue Tierney McNamara (103 characters, not counting spaces). (3.5 seconds!) Thanks for participating!!! It was a packed house with many of New Orleans finest in attendance and of course a plethora of bass players. It's amazing that so many rock guys are amazing filmmakers. Robert Trujillo did a stunning job with this film. There was a course allot of Joni content and besides the interviews for the film there were some bits I had not seen before. I especially enjoyed Peter Erskine who I go to spend some time with when he was here with Russell Ferrante on a Yellowjackets show. My old friend and drummer Ricky Sebastian was on the panel after the movie and told some really funny stories about playing with Jaco back in the day. Johnny Pastorius and Robert were commenting on how much stuff was left on the cutting room floor. I can only imagine the people that were willing to step up and tell Jaco stories. Run, don't walk to see this film!! The short version is that I met Joni in 1983 when she was still playing these guitars, so that tour held significance for me. When I was bidding for it in 2003, I swore that if I was successful I would share the guitar and never hold on to it too tightly. Ashara took delivery of it and Steph and I crossed the Atlantic and collected it at Joni Fest, 2003, where I met so many of the wonderful beings here on JMDL. What a blast! Seeing Kay Ashley's mouth fall open, pick it up, tune it and go straight into Hejira.....what price could you put on that? Anita ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2015 18:48:00 +0200 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Joni's guitar for sale Around the same time Anita bought hers, i rushed to Fred Walecki store with the intent of trying all the Joni guitars that were there and pick one that I liked. Fred had quite a few and i tried maybe 10 guitars or so. None of them really sounded that good to me, and I ended up buying a non-Joni guitar, an early 74 Alembic. Seems to me Joni chose the George Benson for its small size and not for its intrinsic sound qualities. I hate to sound like a douche, but I just didn't get excited....or rather the excitement fell down when holding the prize. Of course I took into account when the strings were old, I'm quite used to that. This won't deter the fans that want to feel the Joni vibe in an instrument, but it's just a warning for those who expect a great guitar on top of the rest, in my humble opinion.
