A good day to hunker down with a CD's worth of Joni covers, and here they come - HOT and FRESH for you just like a dozen Krispy Kremes. Rachel Z and her Trio really get things started right with a swinging instrumental of Help Me from her 2002 Joni Tribute album. You gotta love Suzy Thompson's Appalachian cover of River, unlike any of the others I've ever heard. Frank Lacy put out an album this year with the Mingus Big Band, and does not 1, not 2, not 3, but ALL four of the Mingus-Mitchell songs, the band sounds sensational but Lacy's vocals don't always hit the mark for me. THE highlight for me has to be Nicholas Rodriguez' cover of "Conversation". I saw him perform it at New York's 54 Below and besides having a magnificent voice he gives the song a new spin by singing about his lover who is trapped in a relationship with a woman. Thanks to Paul for these 2 Rodriguez tracks. Also notable, country singer Mindy McCready recorded BSN but never released it, so here it is posthumously. https://www.yousendit.com/download/bXBiYUl0R0ZtMEpqQTlVag 1. Rachel Z Trio - Help Me 2.
