It means so much to me to know that there are people all around the world who share my deep appreciation of Joni Mitchell's words and music. The UK seems to be particularly forward-thinking about recognising her talents (the recent symposium and the inclusion of her music in their curriculum are two examples that spring to mind). I've read, for months now, and with a bit of envy, JMDL tales of close encounters with Joni and of course the amazing sounding Jonifest. But in truth I love living through your stories. You all know her words and music don't just bring enjoyment -- they make you a wiser, more empathic and thoughtful person and a better member of society. I'm often torn between irritation at her low key 'obscurity' and pride that I'm part of a very clever and exclusive club. Thank goodness she appears to be getting better!!!! Attention Covers King!!! Robert Glaspar covers Joni http://www.emusician.com/artists/1333/in-the-studio-robert-glasper/54048 In the category of Problems We All Wish We Had, youll find Robert Glaspers challenging decision as to how to follow up his Grammy-winning Robert Glasper Experiment albums, Black Radio and Black Radio 2. Glasper formed the Experiment after recording with the Robert Glasper Trio for several years. The first Black Radio album shook his fan base and the R&B world mightily with its blend of electronic and acoustic jazz, spoken word, R&B, and hip hop, all embellished with inventive arrangements and effects, and featuring multiple guest vocalists. With Black Radio 2 (2013), Glasper continued this avant-garde approach, and built on a new fan base that extended into the R&B and electronica realms. Now, its been five years since I played trio, Glasper says, and my friends in the jazz world are like, Whered you go? You left us! I was also feeling like this is the time to give the Black Radio vibe a break. I wanted to go back and do a trio record. I missed playing piano and the piano trio vibe. But I also always want to something different that I havent done before. So I thought, if Im going to go trio, Im not going to go back and just do jazz tunes again. Ive acquired this mainstream audience, and I want to bring them along on the trio journey. Thats why I chose to do cover songs. Glasper also saw potential pitfalls in choosing covers that would fit with his trio return. I didnt just want to do all R&B songs, he explains. Because that can be corny. I decided to do songs from my iPod: different songs that Ive loved through the years, from different genres. So while the tools and the lineup are stripped down for the trio album Covered, the palette of material is almost as broad as can be, featuring the music of Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Macy Gray, Jheni Aiko, Kendrick Lamar, Quincy Jones, Harry Belafonte, and more. Its random as hell, Glasper says. I love the fact that its random. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Oct 2015 12:06:51 +0200 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Nash on Joni's health Loidee wrote: "She's out of the hospital. Have gone back and spun through his entire discography and totally love him; he's evolved from straight-ahead jazz to a fusion of hip-hop, jazz, R&B and really made his own sound. He also contributed to Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp A Butterfly", coming soon to almost every critic's "Best of 2015" list. I do hope you're going, and that you, or someone will record the performance. I believe there was a similar Van Morrison event recently. I love that the Queen asked him about The Hollies and that he gives an update on Joni. Can't believe George Harrison, Peter Asher, Simon and Garfunkel passed on signing CSN's first album and agree they probably saw them as rivals. Really good stuff.
