I have a question, do others on the list feel that "one of these things is not like the other?" I think if you are going to do a true collaboration of musicians of Joni's quality it would be Joni, Dylan, Paul Simon, or Joni, Peter Gabriel, Sting. IMHO. Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Joan Baez Celebrated for Fringe Posted by Ralph Meranto * September 11, 2015 Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Joan Baez have enjoyed long careers in music as the female faces of folk beginning in the 1960s. Local singer/musician Linda Foster has developed "Stardust & Butterflies" as a musical tribute to the legacy of these amazing singer-songwriters. The show was a hit at JCC CenterStage in December and has been adapted for one performance each at the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival and a return to JCC CenterStage http://tinyurl.com/qcyy8ej Susan Tierney McNamara Cornell University Prospect Research Officer | Office of Prospect Development | Alumni Affairs and Development 349L, 130 Seneca Place, Ithaca, NY 14850 | phone: 607-255-3871 | fax: 607-254-7166 email: sem8@cornell.edu | To request research email: aadresearchrequests@cornell.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2015 10:46:01 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Stardust & Butterflies, Rochester NY Of course Sue, but many folks who are not as "into the weeds" as we are see all three through the same lens, that is 60's/70's folk singers. I get it. Hey, anyway that Joni gets celebrated is a good thing! Bob NP: Ben Folds Five, "Mess" From: "Susan E. (Great food and a warm and welcoming staff.) Best of all was the audience. : ) First: Bob, you made it happen. Thank you. Second: Michael Paz brought in ALL the sound equipment from New Orleans, set it up, monitored the sound (small room, loud band - big job!) -- he also found John an acoustic bass, Laura Stanley let Dave borrow her acoustic guitar and it was a massive group effort to bring us in with Bob at the helm. Shifflett's brother drove down from No. Carolina which was an added bonus. Meeting some of the core group of JMDL was incredibly cool -- I was knocked out by the sheer endurance and inspiration of everyone. Up all night playing and singing. We were running on fumes since we didn't get to bed (flight delays) until 4am on Sat. morning....we got to the club at 3pm to find that the JMDL group had been staying up to the wee hours EVERY night jamming and playing. We previewed two new songs: "Love" and a medley of "Harry's House and The Arrangment" which will go on the next record. (We also previewed "Don't Let it Bring You Down" by Neil Young) so - - that was fun for us to do live. Michael recorded the gig but I've asked him to let me hear it first before "distributing" -- I never let anyone put out music until I've vetted it. Hope you understand. A side note: yesterday I produced a 17 year old boy, Joshua Tazman, making a recording of 5 songs to enter into the "Monk Vocal Competition" - it's the premier jazz competition in the world and every 4 or 5 years they open it up to singers. Every singer that places in the top 3 has gone on to major recording contracts and have become well-known in the jazz world (Tierney Sutton, Gretchen Parlato, Cecile McLorin Salvant, the list goes on...) anyway...I met Josh a few weeks ago - he came to our "Vocal Intensive" - a week long thing we do at the California Jazz Conservatory. When I asked him who his influences were (on Day One) the first name out of his mouth was, you guessed it: Joni Mitchell A 17 year old kid into Joni. That's a rarity. And - his original music is VERY original and the lyrics poetic. Can't wait for you all to hear him. I will go as far as to say he might be the most talented developing singer I've ever heard. Thanks again to JMDL - look forward to meeting up with Kimberly in November, love Sue Tierney to pieces (and god bless you for mastering so much of Joni's music), sat next to Barbara Ann Little as she wailed the blues (she's got pipes) heard Richard Flynn play a mean dobro, Chuck Mitchell was like a troubadour, Jahida needs to make a CD (if she hasn't already) -- this was what I heard just dropping by for a little while. Bob, by the way, is a ham...in case you didn't know it. I see why you are on stage Bob! I'm pretty shy when it comes to parties, but had a lovely talk with Phyllis Ward....what more can I say. Oh, and my band was super appreciative of how beautifully we were treated. We had fun!!!!!!! Love to all. Also, I can't believe I have another record coming out, but, it "drops" on Sept. 18th. If you are interested just go to my website for deets. "Varuna" - very mysterious....that's what people are saying. xo Laurie ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2014 #784 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here:mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
