As an aside, Ive backpacked and bicycled throughout Northern Idaho and I think its about the most beautiful place in the world. Ive been to a few places in Europe and Asia but havent seen anything like North Idaho. I could have missed something though. An interesting point is that no one really knows where the name "Idaho" came from. From Wikipedia: "The exact origin of the name remains a mystery.[10] In the early 1860s, when the United States Congress was considering organizing a new territory in the Rocky Mountains, eccentric lobbyist George M. Willing suggested the name "Idaho", which he claimed was derived from a Shoshone language term meaning "the sun comes from the mountains" or "gem of the mountains". Willing later claimed that he had simply invented the name.[11][12] Congress ultimately decided to name the area Colorado Territory when it was created in February 1861. Thinking they would get a jump on the name, locals named a community in Colorado "Idaho Springs". However, the name "Idaho" did not fall into obscurity. The same year Congress created Colorado Territory, a county called Idaho County was created in eastern Washington Territory. The county was named after a steamship named Idaho, which was launched on the Columbia River in 1860. It is unclear whether the steamship was named before or after Willing's claim was revealed. Regardless, a portion of Washington Territory, including Idaho County, was used to create Idaho Territory in 1863.[13] Despite this lack of evidence for the origin of the name, many textbooks well into the 20th century repeated as fact Willing's account that the name "Idaho" derived from the Shoshone term "ee-da-how". - -Steve From: JMDL Digest To: joni-digest@smoe.org Sent: Saturday, August 15, 2015 3:27 PM Subject: JMDL Digest V2015 #431 JMDL DigestB B B B Saturday, August 15 2015B B B B Volume 2015 : Number 431 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - -------- B RE: You say idaho, I say Iowa njcB B B B B B B B B B B [lcs4bike@yahoo.com] - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 15 Aug 2015 17:25:22 -0500 From: lcs4bike@yahoo.com Subject: RE: You say idaho, I say Iowa njc From: C S Mitchell Subject: Ho.B Keokuk, Idaho. He replied, "no, no, no I mean..." and then he spelled out, "I-O-W-A."B With a puzzled expression, she repeated it back as she heard it in reference to them, "you will double me, eh?" and firmly asserted, "I do not play poker!!! As far as Joni and Malka's friendship, the story about her putting the tape with Joni's confession about Kilauren in a safe for 25 years has to be one of the most wonderful examples of friendship I've ever heard. Friends keep friends' secrets, and Joni is VERY lucky to have Malka in her life. I also thought Malka describing her amazement at Joni's talent at first sight is also a testament to her perception. All of us know the feeling of flabbergast and unbelief when we meet someone who doesn't get how great Joni's talent is. Malka was there at the beginning and is still there championing the Great Joni Mitchell. Wonderful!! Malka, you were very fortunate to come across joni at that early time and to recognize her beautiful, amazing gifts. Thank you for this truthful, down to earth, heartfelt, informative talk. I don't forget to imagine all the hard work that goes into the the expression Joni's gift. Joni must have spent many hours of effortful concentration in the composing of her work. To be so focused and committed! All of This is not to be take lightly, as is with the writing of your book Malka. (I promise to buy it and read it soon). The creative process is an effort put forth, often long and painstaking. There is so much that goes into it all, as many of you know. Hail to all who are putting forth this most noble effort! Love to joni and appreciation to Anita and Malka and Jaime and to all who worked on the symposium. A true reflection of honor and appreciation of joni. I too enjoyed watching Malka and Jaime speak at the symposium. The moderator was excellent too. Thank you for sharing. I have somehow conquered life's disasters and disappointments by believing that fate was closing one door so that a better one could open. In Malkas case, with the ending of her marriage and fortuitous stop at that coffee house, fate opened a portal into something that was life altering and almost magical. I also believe that good people who suffer get rewarded in subtle ways if they just pay attention. Malka was really paying attention. They were both vulnerable and found each other. How great to see this friendship continue to this day!
