And, you two were in Shadows and Light colors!! Very heartwarming to hear you read!! So eloquently done!!! I love Malka's story of how out of the shadows of that night in Toronto so much light came into her life through Joni's songs. I think most if not all of us on this list can say our lives have been touched similarly. Mine most definitely has and still is!!! I recently went through difficulties with a family member I had only met about 3 times as a child and fewer times as an adult. She and I gambled by traveling with each other only to find out we were totally incompatible. She sent me very hurtful lengthy texts after we parted ways. It was unbelievable and in my tears came the healing salve of Shine in my car while driving home alone. OMG!!! That album was just what I needed!!! "Bad Dreams are Good" and "If" come to my mind now, but the whole album was like traveling with a consoling friend or parent, which was just what I needed at the time. Such a gift to hear and see you and Malka Jamie! So beautiful!!! You both are awesome!!! Malka, you were very fortunate to come across joni at that early time and to recognize her beautiful, amazing gifts. Thank you for this truthful, down to earth, heartfelt, informative talk. I don't forget to imagine all the hard work that goes into the the expression Joni's gift. Joni must have spent many hours of effortful concentration in the composing of her work. To be so focused and committed! All of This is not to be take lightly, as is with the writing of your book Malka. (I promise to buy it and read it soon). The creative process is an effort put forth, often long and painstaking. There is so much that goes into it all, as many of you know. Hail to all who are putting forth this most noble effort! Love to joni and appreciation to Anita and Malka and Jaime and to all who worked on the symposium. A true reflection of honor and appreciation of joni. I absolutely love Malka and can see why Joni or anyone would be glad to have her as a friend. I feel very heartened that so many folk here have enjoyed the video. It was extraordinary that Malka made the trip to the UK. I certainly would never have imagined it when I submitted my abstract. I still find it extraordinary that my paper started with that Joni quote that mentions Malka and the fact that she was in the room when I delivered the paper........my moth still falls open when I think about it. But then who on this list hasn't experienced something extraordinary concerning Joni and her music? Magical. Fascinating and really a commentary on how much artists really do suffer for the art that drives them...haven't we mostly all been there/done that. And I would STRONGLY second what Catherine had to say about the Patti Smith book, "Just Kids." Truly it deserved every accolade that it garnered and the astonishing thing about the book, it really wasn't what she has to say or the story she told. It was just an overall vibe that you got while reading it that was phenomenal. I have told everyone I talked to about it...the book has magic on it. I am a pro photographer so I had an interest in Mapplethorpe. And while not a huge fan, I respect Patti Smith fir her astonishing use of the language..quite a major poet in fact. And her groundbreaking music early in the punk scene. I think she's misunderstood by many and greatly respected by those who do have a clue about her. Wait...did I say I wasn't a huge fan? I lied! Read this book if you haven't. You will find it captivating! If anyone knows this, or knows what address it was, I can walk by and check it out. Many of the houses on Huron Street are still rooming houses or apartments, but most have been substantially gentrified. Certainly the land they're on would get a LOT of money these days and someone would probably love to build a very tall and very glass condo on the site. > > As well, the article that Sue shared with us mentions Patti Smith and her book "Just Kids." I highly recommend this. Even if you aren't a fan of Patti Smith, the story itself is fascinating, all about her early days in New York and her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe. I'm certainly a much bigger fan after having read it than I was going on, and am really looking forward to her new book, "M Train", coming out in the fall. > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Susan E.
