Here again, I read somewhere that Joni said her friends disliked it. But it has a lot of stuff going on in it. The sexy dance beat and the lines ...must I forgive you each time, and say you don't know what you're doing... She addresses it to a partner but it touches on that day in age when you stand your ground and say, well, maybe I do have to go on forgiving, but I do not have to keep picking up the baggage of delusion. I am not old so I am told, but I was not born yesterday, so do not even start that crap with me. My heart is a smoking gun just now. It is an excellent song for certain days." Hi Pete, Great song!! Thanks for adding it to the list. I love your interpretation of it too!! I get that! Like Circle Game, it fits with growing up, gaining wisdom, and reaching the acceptance of not being able to control outcomes. I love Joni's lyric of her heart being a smoking gun. To me that says trust your heart. I have a heart condition where if I don't trust mine, I can end up in the Emergency Department at the hospital. Coming to the acceptance that nothing can be done and moving on is healthy. Once again Joni amazes me more because of people on this list like you Pete with excellent discussion! I have many theories. FACT: Joni was heavily influenced by Annie Ross (who wrote the lyrics to "Twisted" which she of course recorded) and loves Ellington and Miles. These are influences she had before she transitioned and started hiring jazz musicians to work with her. If she was listening to Lambert, Hendricks & Ross (I worshiped at the alter of LHR and still do) as a young woman, for sure that has informed her music. Also the style and lyrics of vocalese (setting lyrics to pre-existing, recorded instrumental solos) is a very stream of consciousness kind of style. Note: "Twisted" is a horn solo by tenor saxophonist Wardell Grey who Annie then wrote words to. Vocalese is very clever, often funny, fearless and complex. I understand completely why Joni would not want someone like Taylor Swift to play her. First of all I don't think Taylor Swift is an actress. She does music, though these days anyone with "celebrity" immediately thinks they should do both. Secondly the movie press would be all about Taylor Swift acting, and not about Joni because lets face it, many more people know Swift these days. Joni's story does not need to be overwhelmed by someone else's spotlight. AND THE BIGGEST REASON!! Joni Mitchell has an attitude. I don't know if anyone of you has noticed it, but it sure does not go along well with today's celebrity culture. Sweet, commercial Taylor is not at all what Joni is going to like. I know quite a lot of you guys get miffed by Joni's distance with modern feminism, and other "causes" but Joni does not and cannot go along with the stream. Besides her artistry (universes away from Taylor Swift and what a lot of people call "art" these days) the other reason I love Joni is that she will not ever fit into any of the neat little boxes we have for our constructs. As a matter of fact she hates that as well as the mentality of stardom and garden variety hero-worship. Its what I love about Joni.I totally get it if true.-Clint On Tuesday, August 4, 2015 10:24 AM, "Barthel, Donald R" wrote: http://www.celebdirtylaundry.com/2015/taylor-swift-stalking-joni-mitchell-b= egging-to-play-music-legend-in-biopic-movie-joni-disses-swift-refuses-to-ca= st-her/ Donald R.
