The model is drunk, vacillating between laughter & tears. Americans at one time thought it humorous at a party to wear a smaller lampshade for a hat, or maybe a fez: a clichC). Joni tells the model she herself is crazy. Then there's "Eddie in the corner thinking he's nobody, and Jack behind his joker, and stone cold Grace behind her fan..." We realize this is a 70s Hollywood party, and speculate who these may be: Van Halen? (He was indeed famous in Tinseltown by then, though not as famous as he'd be in 10 years.) Nicholson? (He wouldn't play The Joker in Batman till almost 15 years later.) Slick from Jefferson Airplane? (i met Ms Slick in Austin, TX when she was showing her paintings in an art gallery & mentioned this reference in a Q&A session. She said it could indeed be her, but claimed ignorance about Court & Spark.) i have a book with a picture of Joni & Nicholson together at a party, much later than C&S, tho.
