No currently active singer-songwriter I can think of loves and respects Joni more than David Wilcox, and his writing and guitar technique is hugely influenced by hers. Of course as a male that can seem less obvious - but the chords and tunings show it. As far as missing her - well haven't we all been missing her for years? I don't think the song sounds like she's died, I think it just speaks in the past tense because it's referring to long ago events.
