I've loved Joni's music since the early 70's. I liked the mention of 'existential' issues, that rang true. I was a huge fan of Hejira, and I used to drive across the desert of southern Washington State. I would play 'Amelia' about driving across the burning desert, and then I'd see a jet vapor trail in the sky and it would just be a magical experience. Plus the part about 'hexagram' and 'strings of my guitar', referring to the 6 vapor trails. So, not to ramble on too much, has anyone on the list ever thought about the relationship between mathematics and super-good music like Joni's?B I always thought there was something to it, apparently from a Google search people have looked into it. Mathematics is a human invention, unlike physics, however mathematics describes physics very well. Some of the most beautiful things in nature have really interesting math constructs. I think music is like that. I remember one Joni interview where she's talking about composing a song, and she looks around the room waving her hands saying she 'sees' this piece over here and that piece over there and starts pulling them together. I was really good at math in high school and college and it was like that, solving a problem. I could almost see pieces of this and that and pull them together. I think composing music must be like that, but the composer is not aware necessarily of the math relationships. I just knew from when I first heard Joni, it's not just the words, it's not just the music, it's the way the whole thing just turns your whole brain into pleasure mode. I wonder if her genius was able to see (perhaps subconsciously) some of the beautiful math relationships as seen in nature. Finally, in response to others: I, too, ask the question: B where is the serious academic consideration of Joni Mitchell as a prominent part of music history and popular culture? B I'll partially answer my own question: B we haven't seen critical examination of Joni's work as we have for Bob Dylan's and perhaps that of a few of Joni's other male peers because Joni is considered a "chick writer," focusing on "women's concerns." B Dylan is "universal"; B Joni occupies a feminized ghetto. I know not everyone will agree with me, but that's sure how it looks from my neck of the woods. This conference is a very welcome step in the right direction. B Congratulations, Anita, for being an integral part of it.
