I can only image her anger and frustration. Several years ago, an IV was inserted in my hand and struck a nerve. I lost my ability to undertake any fine-motor skills - like gripping and manipulating a pen. I had to relearn to print and write. I once was an editorial cartoonist and used to do calligraphy so I found this loss to be embarrassing and frustrating. Further, the attention that all of this has brought must trouble her greatly. I was re-reading Malka Marom's conversations with Joni. In the first set of conversations, Joni talked about the public scrutiny of Sandra Dee's break-up with Bobby Darin and how the paparazzi photographed her pain. She said "I thought that would be unbearable to me -- to be looked at like a bug." Her response to the press sparked her poem, "The Fishbowl". One can imagine an updated version evolving even now. Two other thoughts: song is sometimes used as a therapy for people who have lost speech through a brain injury. That would be a nice development. Also I feel certain that we will hear from Joni again, that she will recover her ability speak. And the reason that I feel that way is because I think she will want to yell at Crosby one more time. B We have a radio station called Triple M in my town! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jun 2015 08:15:23 -0700 From: Shari Eaton Subject: Beethoven Joni being unable to talk is equivalent to Beethoven losing his hearing. Her stories and words are what enwrapped us all! She can't play guitar any longer. Can she hold a pen or type? I hate to think that she wouldn't have a way to express herself. Her machine is busted, as she once described when talking about people with attention deficit (disorder -- she was denying that it would be a disorder but rather a lack of mental discipline). What are the real chances that her machine will be repaired? And how long would it take before it's truly working again. This all makes me tremendously sad. I hope she can still work on the ballets and enjoy her time with her younger girlfriends. According to Crosby she was unconscious for a long time before being discovered. This probably means she had significant lack of blood supply to her brain for a considerable amount of time, not good! B On the other hand, I wouldn't put too much stock in the phrasing: B "To my knowledge she is not speaking yet" may have just been Crosby's way of attempting to be guarded (hard as that is for him!), or acknowledging that change was possible between his last contact with anyone about Joni's health and the time of the interview. B Bottom line: B we still don't know much, and may not for a while. B Sue's idea of praying (or meditating, or sending love to Joni, or whatever feels right) is the one I'm sticking with.
