How do you know that ALL the other choices are classical singers when there have only five episodes been broadcast and the other 15 haven't been named yet? moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jun 2015 17:06:40 -0400 From: Annatr Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2015 #96 Here's what IMDB says about "Love." Mitchell's music made an appearance in the movie _Love Actually_ (2003) . In this mostly comedic film, actress Emma Thompson's character is a fan of Joni Mitchell's music. At one point in the movie, Thompson's character discovers that she has been betrayed by her husband for a much younger woman. She puts on a brave face for the kids, but her moment of private, painful revelation is shown on screen accompanied by an audio track that is silent except for an overdub of Joni Mitchell singing "Both Sides Now", not the original upbeat recording from the 1960s when Mitchell was a 23-year-old ingC)nue, but rather the recent re-recording, a somber sentimental performance by the now husky-voiced middle-aged Mitchell, backed by a lush orchestra -- a performance akin to an older, wiser Frank Sinatra singing the retrospective "It Was A Very Good Year" when he was sixty. This poignant scene is the dramatic pinnacle of the film. Joni Mitchell is credited as one of the actresses. More can be found here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084271/ Has anyone seen this? Are there copies somewhere? The usual suspects (Amazon, Netflix, iTunes) seem to be unaware of it. Very touching. He's so real and straight forward, like his music. He keeps it simple musically - but kind of like Bonnie Raitt, another favorite, has a sound and style that's carried him through the years. They both have battled their demons and I don't know Bonnie's story but it was Michael Brecker (who as you all know worked with Joni) that helped James get clean. Michael was a powerful force in the recovery community in the NY area among musicians when he was alive. RIP Michael (jazz musicians ALWAYS mourn his passing) and congrats to James for producing another beautiful record. Honestly, as time passes, it's harder and harder for musicians to create and I applaud him for going off to be alone to find some more songs to write. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jun 2015 20:51:04 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: James on Joni I hope this comment redeems him in Steve's eyes. South Carolina, with its fucked up Confederate flag flying over the state house, isn't one of them. I boycott most of the Southern states anyway for various reasons, along with a few non-Southern states. The people who live in those states allow the shit that goes on to continue, and I have an ever-decreasing tolerance for it. And yes, Idaho is fucked up too. I'll be making some decisions about staying in Idaho as well.
