I didn't know that. In this series, Kiri chooses 20 favourite singers I think. I haven't heard any of the other broadcasts but all the other choices appear to be serious classical singers so JM is in good company. If you are in the UK, you can access this page http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02t03d1/episodes/downloads and either stream the mp3 or download the file. In case you are not in the UK, this will not work because of geo-blocking. You can access the page with the whole radio programme though here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05ykxt6 and then forward to 2:02 or so to get to the Joni segment. For the convenience of the non-UK folks on this list, there is a download available here: http://www.filedropper.com/kiri-te-kanawa-talks-joni-mitchell On that page, please click the GREY button named "Download this file" and solve the captcha, then the mp3 will become available for download. I have also made an effort and transcribed the major parts of what she said which is a nice exercise for a Kraut writing down what someone with a New Zealand accent is saying in English. So, here we go: - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- the nonstop briliance of writing all these songs [...] The Big Yellow Taxi [...] you would see her in performance and it was all-encompassing. She was born to do that. There wasn't anything else. [...] I like people who are brilliant. [...] She would be a person that I would envy. Because I loved what she did. In the music. [...] Just the music and the writing. That must be wonderful, to do that. It's ver enviable. [...] I just want to be her. I just wanna grab that brain, those fingers, whatever she did - and just do something. That would be, must be so satisfying. You know, my life has been satisfying and it's been great, I've had a wonderful career but - there is always more. [...] Joni Mitchell goes and writes all those songs, for years and years and years and they're all big hits and - just, you know, there is so much in life I feel I've missed out on so much because I was too busy doing [THE ???]. Most people look at my life and think, you know "How does she do that?" and I think "Well, hang on, there is a lot of stuff I would have loved to have done as well". - The songs became her, the sound of her in those songs, anybody else singing it to me would never come up to that standard of what she was doing. She created and, once again, the sound was unique. She used it to the advantage of her songs. You only have to hear two or three notes and "Boom" you've got her. You know exactly who it is. But someone else would sing the song? Not so nice... - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Enjoy! moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jun 2015 14:01:52 -0600 From: Lori Renee Fye Subject: I'm done See ya. Yes our State had a tragedy; sadly South Carolina does not have a monopoly on racism or hatred. Moving on... Firstly, here's a good website that lists lots of the area attractions: http://www.visitgreenvillesc.com/events/ Happy to say that Laurie and her band are a DEFINITE. Their performance will be Saturday the 5th. The venue and setting should work very well for the event and their food is great. Laurie's got an ALL JONI show lined up for us, featuring songs from her CD as well as others. http://tinyurl.com/q4cs8uz Given that, and the location of The Bohemian, I'm planning on making Saturday our "downtown day" and Friday our "country day". So far only Sue and Richard have requested a performance slot, so I'm trying to book a duo who are really cool to highlight Friday night musically, Of course as is always the case, musical spontaneity will overflow I'm sure so I'm intentionally avoiding "over-structuring" things. I intend to have Joni music playing throughout, Joni DVD's and books available for those who want to check them out. I've seen them myself but it might be fun to watch them again with JMDLer's! I've also booked the "Furman Cottage", adjacent to the "Swamp Rabbit Lodge" that I booked initially. This gives us additional beds plus ensures that no one else will be on our 12 acres so we can definitely raise some harm! Cottage - http://www.vrbo.com/625099 Lodge - http://www.swamprabbitinn.com/the-swamp-rabbit-lodge/ As I earlier stated, the property is a stone's throw away from the "Swamp Rabbit Trail" and if you want to bike (it was recently listed as 1 of America's top 10 urban bike trails) they are available for rent. Let me know if you do so I can gauge interest and line up some rental bikes. The Swamp Rabbit Brewery is a mere 3-mile bike ride away! http://greenvillerec.com/swamprabbit Here's who I'm showing in attendance thus far: Bob Muller (Bunk) Janine & Betty (Hotel) Craig Happy Jenkins (3 total) (Hotel) Michael Paz (Cottage b Single) Les Irvin (Cottage - Single) Sue Tierney, Jody, Pat, Anne (Lodge b Elroy Room) Rose Pearl/Steve (Lodge - Judy Room) Steve Dulson/Michelle (Lodge - Jane Room) Phyliss/Bob (Hotel) Richard Cindy Vickery (bunk) Jahida Let me know if you want to add your name to the list! For those of you who are coming, feel free to let me know your beverage needs if any and I can begin lining all that up. Any other questions or comments, please feel free to share. That's all for now - more to come! I'm trying to find out if the collections of photographer Mark Roth survived and where they might be. Since there is a lengthy interview with him on the Joni site, I'm hoping some long-time subscribers may know something about what happened to his things after he passed in 2001. I'm primarily interested in his film and tapes of singer Kathy Smith, but of course interested in the larger archive and whatever Joni material he may have had.. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated and feel free to write me directly if you know anything in particular about Kathy Smith... eliot.kissileff@earthlink.net Thanks ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jun 2015 15:10:18 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: James on Joni Where exactly did you find that?
