[Victor Subject: re: They'll crucify you for changing (or not) No dissin' on JT, please! He's a uniquely American and beloved artist, audibly iconic. While his work doesn't have the social context and importance of say Pete Seeger's it's been quite valid in defining the "standards" of the post (Vietnam) war era. I don't think that we have to be slavish to Joni's personal definition of her own motivations as an artist. Change is not a requisite item. To apply that is to join the club Joni herself rails against in "Borderline." Most of y'all recognize the Joni quote in the subject line. Her restlessness resulted in an incredible career arc of musical innovation. And true to her word, she was unfairly criticized at many steps along the way. However, today marks something that hasn't happened in 13 years...a NEW James Taylor album. His career, of course, is intertwined with Joni's as his life has been. Unlike Joni though, James' career has been like an inflatable float in a swimming pool...not changing and just kind of bobbing along unaffected by what's going on around it. And he's never been overly crucified for never changing, or if he has I've missed it. His albums are like comfortable old shoes that slide on easy and feel good. "Before This World" is his first release since 2002's "October Road" and if you're a fan you'll definitely dig it. In other new release news - Robert Glasper, an amazing jazz artist with a string of fine albums and sessions (he drives much of the musicality of Kendrick Lamar's brilliant "To Pimp A Butterfly") releases "Covered" today, containing a 6+ minute cover of Barangrill. Anytime an FTR song gets covered it's good news. Anytime a powerhouse like Glasper releases a Joni cover it's good news. All in all, a good news day for new music. JT has indeed undergone changes in his music and most surely in his personal life. If you compare the early Sweet Baby James stuff to Hourglass you hear a massive advance in songwriting, production, and sophistication in his craft. No, he didnbt completely alter his course, which Ibm sure is what you mean, but he sure did grow a lot. His voice is better than ever too. Like Joni, he surrounds himself with the finest players in the industry, by whom he is highly respected. To watch him play solo on the Capitol steps in the freezing cold during Obamabs inauguration was just a beautiful sight - and to think of the trajectory of this onetime junkie to being there at that moment was quite poignant. Jonibs insistence on extreme change in her own work, which may have been inspired by artists like Miles, cost her a lot in terms of success. For her it may have felt like repainting A Starry Night was pointless, but there is nothing really bad about developing your art without discarding the intrinsically strong elements that you already possess. The Stones, U2, JT, Steely Dan, have all done this in their own way, and their followings have never waned as a result. Just waiting on word from CD Baby. It is called "Willow Sky", written to honor The Grateful Dead on their 50th anniversary. Has a bit of a Beck "Morning Phase" influence Bob. :) It will also appear on my forthcoming full-length CD, Beautiful Things, due this fall. Featuring the amazing Beth Patterson from New Orleans and other fine musicians! Victor in Bend ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jun 2015 09:59:09 -0700 From: Corey Blake Subject: Re: "They'll crucify you for changing..." or not. He has definitely been criticized. Check out today's Boston Globe review (did you write it?) and almost every review in the '80s and early '90s when he was most definitely uncool and had yet been called an American treasure. As has been said, he has evolved, but he's understated. Rock and roll is supposed to be big and aggressive, so of course rock purists hated him. Rock critic Lester Bangs famously wrote an essay titled "James Taylor Marked for Death" where he fantasizes murdering JT. This was in 1971. Change for change's sake isn't interesting. An artist being true to themselves and their artistic voice has more value to me as a listener. The results are different but both James and Joni have always marched to their own drum. > On Jun 16, 2015, at 7:51 AM, "Susan E.
