[Venue: University of Lincoln] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2015 09:53:53 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: An interesting tidbit So conventional wisdom has it that the first Joni Tribute album was the Canadian CD in 1994 titled "Back To The Garden - A Tribute To Joni Mitchell". It appears that the first one was actually 20 years prior (1974) and released on 8-track: http://tinyurl.com/nlemq8c On the "Delmar Sound Alike Music" label, the artist is shown as Sara Smith. I don't know if that's really the vocalist, this looks like one of those bootleg 8-tracks you'd see in small town gas stations. I'm also assuming that someone found several boxes of these for various artists (Gordon Lightfoot, Elton John, Cat Stevens, etc) because they are all over ebay. This is the first 8-track I've ever bought. I of course have no way to play it but I'm sure I can get it converted to digital. I actually found the track list pretty interesting: Raised On Robbery Woodstock You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio Chelsea Morning California Carey Big Yellow Taxi The Circle Game Night In The City For Free (Titled here as "He Played Real Good For Free") So they feature a song from C&S but not her biggest hit. And no BSN, imagine that! Stay tuned. Thanks Moni - in my original post I was referring to an entire tribute ALBUM...there were many many Joni covers prior to '74, the first being Tom Rush's "Urge For Going" in 1966. The 8-Track you showed features the same tracklisting and would be the same recordings I'm sure. However, it doesn't look like I have the TFT cover you mention in our database. I will have to research and see if I can figure that out. Here in the USA, K-Tel records used to put out records and tapes with popular songs of the day by "The Original Artists". That is to say, the band's name was "The Original Artists" in an effort to scam buyers into thinking they were getting the original hit records. You are a very valuable research assistant.
