I believe that there is a soul inside of it. The more I have listened to it over time, through the years...the more it has become for me, the very essence of Joni Mitchell. Very beautiful family she obviously loves and who obviously love her and know what's going on and are with her and were shortly before Joni got sick. Lori wrote: "Sounds similar to the medical care/end of life choices portion of the family trust that my former spouse and I established and filed when we were married. We each designated people who would make decisions about our health care (when to turn off the machines, when to not resuscitate) should one or the other of us also be incapacitated. It's a pretty routine thing to do, especially for someone who has been in a hospital for nearly five weeks." The end result is much the same: someone makes decisions the patient is unable to make, and consults with health care providers. Still, I'd hardly call a conservatorship/guardianship a "routine" proceeding. A court must be involved, and conservatorship is only awarded when decisions need to be made on behalf of someone who is already incapacitated. I saw that Joni had an attorney appointed by the court to represent her best interests at the hearing (she'd be called a Guardian ad Litem in my jurisdiction). That attorney agreed that the conservatorship was "necessary." I also saw that Leslie Morris was awarded *temporary* conservatorship of Joni's person. To me, that means that the hearing previously scheduled for July 8 may still take place if it is needed. My guess is that this hearing took place now because Joni is about to be moved or undergo a similar change in her care, which will require a decision-maker. Now, I'll come down from the rarefied legal air to a much more vulnerable place. This sounds incredibly serious. But now, Joni will go forward, perhaps leaving the hospital in several days, according to some reports. And she will have a long-time friend with her to help her through this, for which I am most grateful My thoughts and prayers go with them both, and to all who know and care for Joni. The statements and denials have been published. While the web may be full of lies, I can read a court document. And while I never practiced family law, I do know a little about filings with courts. The basic thing might be understood as the "Joni Mitchell rule": never lie. So when someone attests to something about her medical condition, I think there's a good chance of it being true. But I also hope it's not completely true. And that she'll come out of the hospital and give us a little more to think about. I also agree with the oft-expressed opinion here that it's really none of my business. But every morning, my alarm wakes me to the sound of "Hejira" playing. It's a good song to awaken to. And every day, I think of her. After all, surely she touched my soul so why wouldn't I? She was like James Gatz, as Nick Carraway described him: "something gorgeous about [her], some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life". Her albums of 1970-72 were the soundtrack to my college days. Her later albums served as my companion as - to borrow Churchill's phrasing - I walked with "the black dog". It's why we are chat this way on this list. She matters to us. A few other items: Joni was scheduled to appear at the San Francisco Jazz Fesitval this week as they honored her work. They have decorated a building there with a large message to Joni which is quite well done. It's worth a view: http://sfjazz.org/jonimitchell I also came across a photo of Joni that I had never seen before. Mary Ann Halpin, a Los Angeles photographer took a series of photos of "fearless women"; Joni is among them: http://www.maryannhalpin.com/galleries/#/fearless-women/ Enough of the rant. It's nearly 70 degrees and I have to get back to the garden. Best to you all. I love who they are for each other. In my opinion, Joni transcends both life and death. Strong-will and strong spirit. I don't believe we change beings after we die but rather enjoy another facet of our own unique, personal existence. Joni regardless of her condition now or in the future will always be Joni to me. And what that means will continue to evolve as I evolve. Out of concern for me one of my sons asked my thoughts on the what if Joni were to die. He knows how a part of her pours out of me in my life from time to time. I am good now but grieving isn't predictable in my experience. So I don't have any concrete thoughts on the what if. I do know that gratitude has welled up even greater in my heart for Joni since March 31st. Thanks for the indirect invitation to write Lori. It does help!
