When Kakki posted the Earth Day speech Joni gave on the Medicine Wheel I was compelled to buy The Beginning of Survival (a like new used product from Amazon for $7). This disc is filled with what I call her ANGRY songs, and after listening to it several times this week I have a brand new appreciation for the depth and innovation displayed in these songs. Listening to them in this order reminded me how many times I would skip over them when I wanted to listen what I thought were the "better" songs, especially on Dog Eat Dog and Chalkmark In A Rainstorm. The Windfall, Tax Free and No Apologies were songs more often then not I would skip when listening to their respective albums, but now they sound fresh and stand out among the songs on the compilation, including songs I always loved like The Three Great Stimulants, Beat of Black Wings, and Impossible Dreamer. Just when I think I know more than I could ever know about Joni Mitchell, another level is revealed and I'm amazed again. Jim, I'm not quite so pessimistic. As Kakki pointed out, the doctor who completed the report filed with the court on Joni's capacity allowed for the possibility that she might be able to attend hearings in 4-6 months. It appears to me that, while Joni may in fact be unresponsive, and her condition now is quite serious, at least one physician does not believe it is irreversible. I'm also not sure she is being released to her own home. Being admitted to a long-term care or rehabilitation facility in the very near future could explain why she needed a conservator immediately. I think its my favorite Joni cd. What a track listing! Joni said in some interviews during the ballet period that she considers the music in the ballet (80's on) to be her best work, and at this point I am inclined to agree. Since Earth Day I have been viewing her work from that point of view. Joni has said she dosen't think she'll be remembered for her best work. I think she will definitely be remembered for Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi, Woodstock and Circle Game for a very very long time, the way Stephen Fosters songs are part of the American musical experience, ie., sung in music classes in grade school, etc. It would be nice if all this other stuff lasts which I think she has been very concerned about. I think those four songs are more important than any Dylan songs. Blowing in the Wind is nice, but does it really say anything? Joni's songs always say something. I particularly like how BOS starts with The Reoccurring Dream. That song was lost on the back side of Chalk Mark. It sounded like filler to me. But as the first song on BOS I hear it in a whole different way.
