I don't ever remember reading anything about Joni ever busking. Have I missed something? B Actually I thought that statement was a quote from the AP article. (I don't read most of the posts, so I missed the context.) I probably wouldn't have chimed in if I'd known it was from a list member, so I apologize for hurting your feelings, if I did. We are in a difficult position because Joni is more than a run of the mill celebrity to many of us. She was and still is a significant part of our lives because of the influence her music and lyrics had on us in our formative years. She is almost like a member of our family or a very close friend to many of us. But obviously this is not really the case; so we aren't told what is going on with her as we would be about a family member or close friend. I think that causes us to speculate more than less emotionally involved fans would do.B The speculation flared up after the TMZ news, but it is fading now, I think. There is little more to speculate about. All we can do is hope and pray that she is not suffering and that she will soon recover fully from whatever afflicts her. B "Again and again the same situation ..." I do think there's a difference, though, between expressing concern for Joni and speculating on very private details.B It just feels disrespectful. With that written, I was happy to read personal stories about meeting Joni. There's no question (in my mind, anyway) that 'Shadows and Light' is just plain brilliant. But I have a special place in my heart for 'Miles of Aisles'. I believe my parents gave me that double LP for Christmas. At that point I think I only owned 'Court and Spark' and 'Clouds'. 'Miles of Aisles' was my introduction to those magical songs from 'Blue' and 'For the Roses' that Joni performed in her solo sets. 'Woman of Heart and Mind' with that beautiful guitar part, the dark passion of her delivery on the powerful 'Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire', the sprightly dulcimer accompaniment and lively vocal of 'All I Want', Joni's sterling, gut wrenching performances of 'A Case of You' and 'Blue' - I did not know those songs at all at that time. I think those 'MOA' performances are still my favorite versions of them. Joni has proven herself to be brilliant at piecing together the arrangements for her later work with ensembles. But there is so much of her earlier solo work that is astounding in the fullness of sound she could get with just a guitar and her voice. Of course, it helps to have that gift for creating those incredible songs. I lived in Iowa and for many years, 'Miles of Aisles' was my only experience of Joni performing live. It was also a sampler of the pre-C&S albums which I soon felt compelled to own. However, I shall have to look again at it, I think) and thinking what a monstrously good album it has. Pat Metheny's playing throughout Amelia is sublime and his solo at the end is so in keeping with the song that I think I might even prefer this live cut to the album. MOA is great, but my view is SAL is greater, Anita ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2014 #617 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here:mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
