At that time, I wasn't aware of Emily Carr but her paintings, especially of the Haida Gwaii totem poles, were spectacular, and Steph and I talked about Joni's work and imagined that she might have some affinity with Emily. I remember most clearly photographs of Emily with her pet Black Crow, so we wondered if Joni might have done that, too and had quite a laugh! I wonder if the crow photos will be included in the exhibition in Toronto. When we were in the museum, Steph and I talked about the similarities between the independent spirits and love of the land of Emily and Joni, so when Joni recited her poem at the Luminato about Emily Carr, it felt to me another one of the fantastic coincidences that have surrounded my whole life and relationship to Joni's music and art. We girls from England had speculated on Emily and Joni as kindred spirits two years previously. I think you will really enjoy the exhibition. Seeing paintings 'live' you get the sense of scale. Pictures of of paintings are never the same and I really loved Emily's art. So, I am sending it again (with apologies if this is duplicative) I was travelling, travelling, travelling on a not-so-lonely road to Margaritaville with my daughter and 8-month old grandson last month, listening to some CD's on "shuffle", when I was struck by the lyrics to Jackson Browne's "Fountain of Sorrow". I had heard the song many times before, but for some reason this listening kindled in me an epiphany of sorts - that it "must" have been written about Joni. When I got home a few days later, I googled it on Wikipedia, which reported that it was, indeed, generally attributed to being about Browne's brief affair with Joni circa 1972. However, when I re-visited the "Songs About Joni" section in JoniMitchell.com, I did not see it listed there. I would welcome Simon Montgomery's insights about this song - and, of course, any comments from other listers as well. Bobsart Jackson Browne - Fountain Of Sorrow - 1974 Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer I was taken by a photograph of you There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more But they didn't show your spirit quite as true You were turning 'round to see who was behind you And I took your childish laughter by surprise And at the moment that my camera happened to find you There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes Now the things that I remember seem so distant and so small Though it hasn't really been that long a time What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all Although for a while, our path did seem to climb When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger While the loneliness seems to spring from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Now for you and me it may not be that hard to reach our dreams But that magic feeling never seems to last And while the future's there for anyone to change, still you know it seems It would be easier sometimes to change the past I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school Where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you There's this loneliness springing up from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes but now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to struggle, you've had to fight To keep understanding and compassion in sight You could be laughing at me, you've got the right But you go on smiling so clear and so bright - ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2014 #1967 ****************************** - ------- To post messages to the list,sendtojoni@smoe.org. It may be that she simply doesn't want to deal with the press or an avalanche of attention, or to have friends and relatives doing either at this time, no matter what her prognosis is. But, although I hate to think it, another possibility is that Joni has been or still is seriously ill, perhaps with a new diagnosis, and simply needs time to incorporate that herself before sharing it with the world. Just think: what if any one of us got bad news at the hospital or doctor's office, and two of the top things we had to consider were 1) how much to tell the media, and 2) what public reaction would be?! I can't even conceive of it. So, while I would like to know more for my own peace of mind, I hope Joni releases as much or as little information as she wants at a time of her own choosing, for her optimal comfort. That said, Daisy's post gives me some much-needed hope. Mary. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Apr 2015 19:36:04 -0400 From: Bob Muller Subject: Laura & Joni That'll be easy. I chose the one with the best success rate and after one session I have not had another cigarette in almost 2 years. However, one has to get to the point where they are truly motivated to quit. My decision had nothing to do with health reasons but I did have a reason that compelled me and decided that was finally it. I was thinking of Joni in the hospital and remember having a major surgery back in '91. High on painkillers the first night, I wandered the hall holding on to the IV apparatus at 2 a.m. looking for a "smoking room." A very old night nurse yelled over to me "are you looking for a place to smoke?" and directed me to a small outside balcony on the 4th flr. ALL of the other nurses were out there puffing away. I couldn't believe it but was glad to know the spot. The next day I wandered out there and there was a woman who had just delivered a baby smoking away with all the nurses. Ha! Had another surgery in 2007 and actually had no desire to smoke because they'd given me such relaxing drugs. I do hope the break will help Joni give it up. Even if a lot of damage has already been done, it is never to late to quit.
