My own list would have been very different but the views here are insightful - TI would have been near the top of my list. This person clearly understands what they are writing about. They have also given me a new way to think about ACOY. The preamble was very interesting and i would urge others to read it. Parts of it were reminiscent of the Telegraph article Joe linked to earlier today: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-life/11519073/Joni-Mitchell-Every-woman-needs-this-powerful-music-in-her-life.html Like so many others on the list I've been upset by the news that Joni has been unwell. It is unsettling to think that it takes something like this for so many interesting takes on Joni's musical legacy to appear in the media. I'm off to see Sinead O'Connor in concert tonight. I think she is another artist largely misunderstood. Garret ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Apr 2015 14:43:08 +0000 From: "Susan E. McNamara" Subject: Joni's current status?? OK, it's officially been over a week. When Steve had open heart surgery he was in the ICU five days and in the hospital a total of 9 days. We are on day 8 today. I hope that she snuck home over the weekend and didn't tell anyone. I still hearken to what my sister (a Joni fan as well) said to me when I told her I joined a Joni Mitchell discussion list: "Oh wow, Joni fans are people that feel things very deeply" and as brief as that is I think it states the case very well. It's not so much a question of gender/race/sexual orientation/geographical locale as much as it is a matter of the HEART. Like Sue I'm disappointed in the lack of news regarding Joni's health. While I respect her right to her privacy it would certainly be great to have a better 'warm and fuzzy' feeling than I have. My wife recently went to the hospital for pneumonia (a severe case). Her kidneys stopped functioning, she was actually close to dying. I felt obligated to update friends and family (via Facebook) a couple of times a day until she was released from the hospital. (She returned to work this week and is doing great btw). It's not some kind of perverse celebrity obsession as much as it is a sincere concern for someone who has FELT like family for decades, as Mark so beautifully put it. I love reading interviews with her. I recently read one from the Chalk Mark promotions. At the beginning the writer acknowledges: "she's B famous for her disdain of stupid questions" and right away, one stupid question after another. Its funny. No wonder she smokes so much! (That articles title is "Joni Mitchell fields the silliest questions with humor" from March '88) I recommend checking it out. I really like that album (Harlem in Havana is amazing) but I just assume for some reason that it's not a big favorite with everyone. When I saw the ranking that the writer gave TI I was all "Uh-oh, Sue's not going to like that"...I also loved the "gateway drug" line in talking about HOSL, and it's sorta true. I'm sorry about your colleague. That kind of thing can be a real bummer. And a lot of "is/was she folk?" The writer below was obviously on drugs when he typed "1960" - what year would it have been? Date: Mon, 6 Apr 2015 19:39:33 -0600 From: Folk Routes Subject: Re: excellent appreciation of Joni In the last several months I have been spending a lot of time with the Joni catalogue. This was inspired by three live recordings from 1967(UK/London, 1960(Newport Folk Festival), and 1970(Amchitka). Joni's early folk club days are well documented here in Calgary by several of my listeners. Calgary had a big supportive scene - Joni Andersen's played a baritone guitar and sang folk/trad songs like The House of the Rising Sun. I have been through the early recordings and find the folk essence very strong, not come the difficult time where she truly finds her voice with jazz musicians. There are several pivitol point on her 'first' official live album creating an exception performance - including dulcimer. In 1994 she played The Edmonton Folk Festival and again I saw this truly well-formed solo songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. She was amazing and not unlike a John Martyn-like sound. Sooooo is she folk .... I continue to say yes as she has taken it to places that others are expanding. As for dance I was at the premiere of her ballet here in Calgary...wow !!! Just my thoughts... I guess they have to say that if there is even a small chance, but oh my God, the bottom fell out of my world until he woke up in ICU. He's been doing great but that was quite a roller coaster. I guess we will keep the candle lit for Joni till we know she is safely home. I still don't know why my friend quit work either, which is bothering me. Ambiguity is the devil's playground (or was that boredom?) !!!!! :-) - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Sent: Wednesday, April 08, 2015 1:25 PM To: Garret Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: DJs on Joni You're quite welcome Garret - I read the Telegraph article this morning and enjoyed it, even though I found myself saying that "Wait, Joni is essential for MEN too!"
