Since she was found unconscious and didn't wake up until she was already in the ambulance, she really had no way of backing out of going to the hospital. Don't ask me why but my whole life I feel like I've been surrounded by people who I've had to beg to get in the car to bring them to the hospital; my ex, my mom, my current guy Steve, who was holding his arm and couldn't breathe and I still had to plead with him to get in the car and have me drive him the 5 minutes to the hospital ... and yes, he was having a heart attack. STUBBORN. Still stubborn, but thank God, alive. It drives me nuts, but you know, everybody has their own life to live. Another thing I was thinking about (to avoid working) was I hope that Joni doesn't have to be driven through a mob of gawkers and TV crews to get back home. I guess that's the price of fame. After hearing of Joni's health issue, I was hoping she could hear my story about her and how our paths briefly crossed which thrilled me. I hope she reads this! Joni Mitchell has always been my favorite musician, and she is the only musician who I own every CD ever recorded. I love her early works and her later works equally. I have been listening since the early 70's through high school and college and continuing on to now. She has had a huge part in my life, and many of her songs have deep meaning to me. I'm pretty sure it was 1979, I was in college in Seattle, and heard she was performing in Vancouver BC, not far from Seattle, with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny! My rag-tag bunch of fellow college students were thrilledB and scraped up enough money to buy tickets, drive up in the old beater station wagon, and get a cheap hotel room. So we're just reaching downtown Vancouver in our beater station wagon and pull up to a stop light. Next to us pulls up a black limousine. I joked that it would be funny if Joni was in there. And sure enough, as the limousine pulled to a stop there was Joni, right next to us at the stoplight!! We were all shocked and elated and pulled out our concert tickets and showed them to her through the window with lots of waving and excitement. She was so nice and waved back and looked really happy. We were just all so thrilled to see her so close up. I'll never forget that. The concert that night was one of the best I've ever heard or seen. Be well Joni! And thanks for the thrills! The FDA will soon announce whether there is evidence of a breakthrough of sorts, enabling Duke University to seek corporate partners to market the treatment. It begs the question whether any epidemiologists have studied the limited numbers of folks who survived the polio epidemic in the 1940s and 50s to see incidence of cancers (or, absence thereof). Like Joni, most of these folks would be in their 70s. How wonderful it would be to consider that persons who have suffered and survived such an ordeal might be saved from another by way of that experience.
