Continuing to move ahead/go for it/try to detect it, here's FRESH Volume 213, mostly comprised of 2014 tracks but some older stuff too. This is such an amazing piece of work. I didn't appreciate it before, though, because I was for a period obsessed with the Travelogue album, heard it many times. The original version is helpful when trying to learn it since by the time she gets to Travelogue Joni is phrasing like a jazz singer, back phrasing and forward phrasing, so, to learn, it's good to go back to the first version. As well, when I read Corinthians 13 and found how she adapted this, well, I was in a transformational state for a couple days. I hope to find a way into this song. It is, for me, the most challenging one so far. BY THE WAY everyone...SFJAZZ finally has started to announce the line-up for the Gala on May 8th. Here's the latest: http://sfjazz.org/jonimitchell and yes, that's my name on the list - guess I can finally shout it from the mountain top!! Been listening to Court and Spark on Vinyl since I picked it up used the other day. Mostly like Bob the new Courtney & Kendrick albums and any Alabama Shake song that gets released that week. The last Joni song I listened to in the car was "Night Ride Home" and the last one I physically played was the ecstasy inducing "Dawntreader." And I simply can't imagine practising a Joni song ready for my birthday on May 8th to sing at SF Jazz. GO LAURIE! Here's what Joni says about Passion Play (When All The Slaves Are Free): "I always liked the Rabbi Jesus' spunk and his rebellious spirit. My father told me, "Your Jesus is awfully human." He also said my way of telling the story of Moses and the Burning Bush would be, to some people, blasphemous! This song is basically my telling of the Easter story but it morphs into contemporary ecological and sociological disasters. It is about crisis in the heart and healing of the heart. The "I" perspective that I am singing from is that of Zachius, the tax collector. He was short. He was jumping up and down in the back row of a large crowd that gathered to witness the arrival of Jesus into the town of Jerusalem. He had climbed into a sycamore tree to get a better look. " I've been too busy catching up with some of Bob's Covers to listen to any original Joni recently. There's been some great finds, including three that for me better the originals: Ian Shaw's fantastic Harlem in Havana, Cheryl Barnes's Come in From the Cold, and... (I know this is sacrilege!) Polly Gibbons' All I Want. Is it obvious that Joni's swoops and octave jumps owed something to R&B/soul vocal styling? I'd never made the connection until hearing that cover. I thought I hated Mimi Klein's Be Cool for ditching the swing in the melody, but somehow it's grown on me a lot. And Super Optimistic's disco All I Want was just great fun. And finally the various retro covers of Chelsea Morning (especially the English/Welsh? kids' choir) reminded me what a gloriously uplifting song that is. So once again thanks Bob!
