The one aspect of folk song that Joni often retained was the stanza by stanza form with the refrain at the end. During the Court and Spark era we heard more the pop format of verse, pre-chorus, chorus and bridge, such as in Help Me, but by the nineties she was back writing stanzaic verse forms, such as in Passion Play. The songs of DED I think of pretty much every day, esp Shiny Toys, Fiction and the title song. "Money is the road to justice, and power walks it on crooked legs" I just love! And I love Shine. Both of those albums really describe the world we live in to me, and Dog Eat Dog is 30 years old!B Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Mar 2015 17:58:17 +0000 From: "Susan E. McNamara" Subject: RE: A STARtling Revelation I (dreamed I) saw in Joni Mitchell's Woodstock I have to admit I really liked the imagery of Joni as John the Devine seeing a new vision for her generation ... I dreamed I saw the bombers ... turning into butterflies ... A dream, obviously, but as far as Revelation goes, Slouching Towards Bethlehem works better for me ... (Joni singing Yeats not the Bible, of course!) Woodstock is quite an astounding song ... after watching Mockingjay Pt 1 last night, the image of Joan of Arc comes to mind, too. :) From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com [mailto:Bob.Muller@fluor.com] Sent: Thursday, March 12, 2015 1:47 PM To: Susan E. I'm very familiar with the book of Revelation, having been a Sunday School teacher for the better part of a decade and leading discussions and studies of the book several times. Not to say that I'm an expert on it, just to say that I'm more than a little familiar with it. Certainly much of Joni's work is informed by religion, no doubt. Simply saying that Joni uses the word "golden" and the phrase "I saw" in Woodstock and that the words are also omnipresent in Revelation is a bit of a stretch for me. I will say that it's a tribute to the depth of Joni's skills as a lyricist that people can see so much in them. I did it five times before I felt I had anything worth sharing. Working from a CD source is far from ideal though. Certainly the new restoration tools can do a lot, and maybe she just discovered that in remastering for the boxed set. If anyone can find out whether she has her masters that would be the first stepb&Les, could you? ================================ I was one of the lucky recipients of Dave's remaster of STAS back in 2007 (which I subsequently lost when my computer died unexpectedly) and the difference is remarkable. Any chance those remasters are still available Dave? I tried searching the web and I don't see any HD version of STAS available for purchase as RR mentioned. BTW - There was an article in Uncut Magazine years ago in which David Crosby discussed his relationship with Joni and he mentions that when producing her first album, he was breaking up with her at the time which was not a comfortable situation for either of them, the point being that David believed that he had fallen in love with her despite Joni's comments. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail message (including attachments, if any) is intended for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed and may contain information that is privileged, proprietary , confidential and exempt from disclosure.
