There is an endless amount that is going on in every song, and some thing I have never given any thought to. That is the way Laurie is singing the words: it's how every single word seems to have a backdrop of all the situations it gets used in, how it may be describing something but much more it is showing endless takes on it, that nothing is there to bind and constrict one .....that from some vantage point it is all about the musings that go on in ones mind because there is nothing concrete about anything at all.I can give a list of words here except it is almost every word here, and the ones that are left out are themselves part of phrases that are sung in a way to capture some other interesting approach to whatever. It is so amusing, conjuring up such an absurd amount of possibilities: the present and the past is only a passage to it all. When you talk about photo beauty getting attention.......the way you say "attention" is a good enough example. Just about any word would do. This is apart from all the sounds and inflections and changing rhytms. It helps that one knows the original song and words because it shows how different a light one can cast on absolutely everything. Who knows just what could be going on in Joni's mind after all. Maybe Laurie has got more of an idea. I don't know if I'm managing to put across at all what I'm being subjected to listening to this......lots of amusement and marvellings and so many ideas about what ones ideas might be. Maybe the house you grew up in was affected by Joni's presence and music and your mind was receptive to it because it sounds like you've been on a long journey resulting in this which is just so original. Or maybe it's that my mind has cleared and your cd just happened to arrive. You deserve every single bit of praise you get including that you're the leading jazz musician of the decade starting right now. There is so much more I could've said just about eastern rain. I wake up after sleeping with a sense that it has been going through my mind and was maybe reorganizing the shape of my brain, as I am more refreshed than I may have expected....I put nothing past anything. I really think that music is most powerful and that it may in some objective way shape and change the emotional quality of space. Forget about God being a mathematician. Some of these piano passages are just so hugely unexpected and really the most accurate thing I can say is that music can obviously capture and change some inner and outer architecture of the world itself. No wonder the skye has to be so open and bleak , and the seas surface so impenetrable . It has to leave room for every one of us to suggest our own geometry to the world. Taylor Swift too. Maybe we can even change it with our songs and our rendition of other's songs. And maybe we can change time. Music doesn't just bring up sensory associations....maybe it contains them in abstract. Color gets conveyed. Amusing sounds. The absurdity of the notion of any feelings around anything having to be fixed. Rhytms that allow your mind to re-engage. In eastern rain what I should've said was not that the rain is insistent but incessant and that you and the band are there outside under the skies no matter what the words say. There is something unsaid out there in the drenched space under the clouds and that is where the band is at. But now that I can hear the words better I do hear further things there.....In other songs there are sounds that suggest ways out of frustrations, like of someone being late.....the way you accentuate taking a taxi to 'your MOTHER's home'...how that accentuation changes the thought....the sounds of the headphones being on high, let alone the whole trip thus far. The way you say "money" in 'cold blue steel out of money'.Do you want to......CONTACT someone first". "You know I'll try to be there for YOU, when..."The music of the words and music of the phrases and the music of the band is just so suggestive of things hilariouss , paradoxical, all things that could be and could've been, all along. If I was going to be put in solitary confinement in some dark space I'd choose this cd to remind me of the entire human realm.....things that have passed in it and the mind that is the passage out of anything. Even if there would be no-one to take me, to the sea.....I can clearly hear someone's been there...at least this whole band.. Most of all what comes from all of this is the freedom that lies beyond all and also in all situations, if you just let your imagination go..... One might just as well dwell on things because nothing is limiting if you do.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2015 15:07:34 +0000 From: Anita Gabrielle Subject: Re: and here's more Ingrid, so great to hear you so appreciate different interpretations of Joni's music. I think hearing new slants on the songs just underline what a great writer Joni is. We are so lucky to have so many great musicians as part of JMDL who bring such a myriad of interesting new insights into the music, Anita > On 21 Feb 2015, at 14:44, ingrid lochrenberg wrote: > > Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light arrived. Everything can get one down and in yet everything there is the suggestion of an alternative. One should live for as long as ones not foolish to a point of complete disrespect and then only would one really be able to disentangle oneself and let loose on full exploration. I think Joni is really invested in a Woodstock scenario. I'm trying to figure things out for you Joni! I'm not waiting for god or Jesus or some messiah or leaving it to anyone else in case nobody does it! I appreciate your listening with such care and letting me and the group know your impressions. For sure, each word is very important to me - no word is sung without full exploration. Joni provides such an amazing canvas to work with - as I've said before - the strength of her art is that it can be interpreted by others and have new meanings and angles. Her songs have gone out in to the world and become "ours." We are lucky to have this repertoire of extraordinary music in our lives. I bow to her and all that she has created. It takes my breath away, really. Laurie On Sat, Feb 21, 2015 at 6:44 AM, ingrid lochrenberg wrote: > Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light arrived.
