It was one of the very earliest Joni song to be recorded by others, even before she had a recording contract of her own. The words are here: http://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=71&from=search I think she released her own studio version as a "B" side of a 45, early on. She didn't put it on an album until "hits", but then she like it well enough to put it on the thematic "Songs Of a Prairie Girl" too. As you say, Clouds IS a strong album with a great flow but if she had included UFG as opposed to one of the songs she chose it would STILL flow beautifully. I'm only bringing it up because UFG was a song she agonized over and worked on for a while. You're probably aware that the first pressing (not released) of Blue did have UFG and Hunter on it, and Little Green was omitted. Obviously this changed with the formal release. I love UFG, I believe it was one of the very first songs she wrote, which is amazing. At least there's a studio recorded version of it. I don't she made a studio recording of Eastern Rain, did she? The best we can hope for as artists is to do something that touches the listener in ways that deepens their life or creates a feeling that captures something universal. To give credit where credit is due on the whole record, it is the band as a unit that enabled me to sing in the style you hear - be it rhythmic, melodic or in the interpretation. Joni's songs are so evocative. Putting a jazz spin on her songs was very organic for us and came out of a group sound we already had before doing the record. With that said, your poetic words and insights, observations and perceptions are deeply appreciated.
