I was in the "sensitive" folk room with about 37 candles of different sizes and shapes blazing, passing around the acoustic, doing Tin Angel. Les Ross did a beautiful Amelia, someone probably did Puff the Magic Dragon. Just like a coffee house circa 1957. Very clean cut. Then on the other side of the house..... insanity! Sue, I loved looking at the the Jonifest document. I hope she got it. I went to 3 fests at Ashara's I think, 99,00, 01, the last one just a few days before 9/11. I'm glad many people still contribute to the list and hopefully others lurk from time to time. I've enjoyed listening to many of the Joni covers from list people. I've watched Robin and the Mutts do Just Like This Train a number of times on youtube, a song I particularly like. Thanks,B Jeff On Sunday, February 15, 2015 9:49 AM, Victor Johnson wrote: The Ganga Line in Ashara's living room was one of the funniest and craziest music experiences I've ever had!B We were rolling on the floor laughing, and trying to play instruments at the same time. Of course, in the room across from the kitchen, at the same time, there was some beautiful acoustic music being played in a more quiet, serene setting...which made it even more hilarious. I stayed at the beach in Atty May's house that year with Paz, Kakki, and Nikki.B I think we got back to the beach that evening about 4 am in the morning.B One of the best weekends ever.B I wrote about it in the song "Parsonage Lane". I remember it like it was yesterday. Victor in Bend "4 am on Plum Island, Singing to the dawn, We walk towards the water, Through the heavy sand. Yet I know I must soon go, To wander among the clouds, Where the roads go on forever, They always take me home." On Sun, Feb 15, 2015 at 6:22 AM, Susan E. Hearing the sounds and the rhythm that seems to change lets one imagine this overwhelming presence of rain....and the interlude of spending a night with someone because of it. I like your voice seeming to communicate and talk to and be with this person and while reflecting on things breaking into a more individual expression....carried away with the tune. I like the feeling that this rain is a balm to the soul and that is the essence of night.....the person and the activities of the night is a mere keeping up with this insistent rain that won't leave your brain alone! Nowadays, as in listening to this song I realise how rhytm can free up ones thoughts and bring a feeling of going off on tangents and and unexpected paths in ones imagination and I suppose that it's jazz that affords one the opportunity of accentuation the notes at different and unexpected places. (I have never been sure what jazz is.) It's incredible how music brings to mind a different structure of experience. Thankyou for your song that takes one somewhere else. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2015 22:30:36 -0800 From: Laurie Antonioli Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2014 #1770 Ingrid, thank you so much for your kind words. The best we can hope for as artists is to do something that touches the listener in ways that deepens their life or creates a feeling that captures something universal. To give credit where credit is due on the whole record, it is the band as a unit that enabled me to sing in the style you hear - be it rhythmic, melodic or in the interpretation. Joni's songs are so evocative. Putting a jazz spin on her songs was very organic for us and came out of a group sound we already had before doing the record. With that said, your poetic words and insights, observations and perceptions are deeply appreciated.
