The station I listen to is Akron's The Summit, 90.7 available online. I enjoy stuff like the Decemberists, Avett Brothers, Red Wanting Blue, Head and the Heart, Amos Lee, Imagine Dragons, also Soccer Mom stalwarts John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz. Golden oldies like Better than Ezra, Dave Matthews, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, Spin Doctors and stuff from the prehistoric era like REM and Talking Heads. And tons of Chrissie Hynde since she's from Akron and wisely left fifty years ago. I made note of Paz's station in New Orleans, I think I would enjoy listening to that. Some of these bands are mentioned in the Vanity Fair article, I flicked through it at the library today. I feel like I've heard the stories about a million times by now but I enjoyed seeing the picture of James Taylor and Joni where he's staring at the back of packs of Kool Aid, I also drank tons of Kool Aid in 1971, esp Wild Cherry. Its nice to see the attention Joni's getting and her being her feisty self especially after being not well for a long time. The first pictures reminded me of Georgia O'Keefe. I thought well, Joni's not singing and making music anymore, just painting so she's finally turned into Georgia. These new ones have a "punkish" quality I feel. Here she reminds me a bit of Patti Smith and Iggy Pop in the white nightie dress. But she's been saying she was a punk for awhile, how she smoked and hung out with Indians and rode her bike to the bad part of town when she was young. And she danced with Johnny Rotten in the Caribbean in the 80's. I really hope she's working on that book. And I hope it dosen't have much gossip and celebrities in it. Her encounters with regular people and her creative processes is more interesting to me and she is really above gossip. Compared to her most other celebrites are just entertainers, though there are other great writers. Bob M. that Damien Rice album I've been hearing lately is something I really want to check out. The song you mention is like 10 minutes long-- sounds interesting.Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2015 22:41:44 -0500 From: Timmy D Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2014 #496 I read the New York Magazine piece. "Byrds", I thought. But it was "Look Through Any Window" by The Hollies. It seemed interesting that there was cross-pollination between those two bands long before CSN started singing at Joni's house. Or was it Cass'es house? Only a music buff would consider this stuff. Jim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2015 01:39:23 +0200 From: ingrid lochrenberg Subject: Star maker machinery Even the critics are horribly conformist. The accolades handed out at the Grammys make a even more of a mockery of the notion of discernment or judgement. I have realised long ago that competitions don't reward talent but home in on something which will be a populist choice. It is an achievement not to be recognised, and come last. So at no level are these people in these industries helping out with some genuine assessment of value. When schools and companies and colleges look for leadership qualities, they are looking for those young people that are conforming and exemplifying established values reflective of themselves. Leadership qualities is a joke. The Grammys and Oscars etcetera are superficial de lux. If Joni got something ever it would've been for her looks at the time, or her popularity, not for intrinsic value to her music. These accolades raining down upon her because it is unavoidable to recognise her is really something very strange..... No wonder she reminded the art gallery that she was doing them a favour.
