I don't love Dylan's complete catalogue but Blood on the Tracks, Desire and a couple of others were part of my personal soundtrack along with Joni. I also agree with the writer of this article that Time Out of Mind was among the best of his later career. I saw Dylan at Cornell in April 2013 and he was really great! I have to listen more to this new offering again before I give it a thumbs up! :-) Sue Sue Tierney McNamara Email: sem8@cornell.edu - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Tom Ross Sent: Friday, February 06, 2015 6:28 AM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2014 #1704 [sendtojoni@smoe.org doesn't work on my browser; please forward. thanks] Joni's a better poet. Neither is great. Zimmerman's namesake is. Show me a line like "Do not go gentle into that good night" or "I sang in my chains like the sea." (What would have been Dylan Thomas's' 100th birthday, recently, went virtually unnoticed.) K D Laing gave us a better album of standards, And many more have. The guy seems bankrupt of ideas and graceless in delivery. But he is a master of self-publicity. It was never at the top of my list of favorite Joni albums, but in November 2011 I decided to start my JM.com guitar instructional videos with this album, mostly because Both Sides Now was on it. What a journey for me!!! I'm two songs shy of completing the videos (I Don't Know Where I Stand and Tin Angel -- I'm not doing Fiddle and the Drum ... no guitar!). I will never again underestimate the precision and detail that Joni Mitchell employs when writing songs, composing or recording. It's really stretched my skills considerably to get the small details right, with her subtle bass runs, vocal acrobatics, and intense emotion that she puts into these songs. I will be performing I Don't Know Where I Stand and Go Tell The Drummer Man (same tuning) at the March 7 Ithaca Joni Mitchell Tribute, and I'm happy to say I think I may have both songs down ... although I'm more worried about the singing than the guitar playing. I'm really excited about this year's 6th Annual Tribute. Ithaca LOVES Joni Mitchell!! So listening to Clouds, I found myself wondering why she didn't put Urge For Going (UFG) on it. I understand why she left it off STAS, didn't fit the theme and all that, but it was one of the songs she was most proud of and had worked the hardest on. The only thing I can think of is that by the time Clouds was coming out there were already EIGHT other recordings of it by other artists, but not too many well-known. And if that's true, then why would she have put BSN on it which was getting covered as well. UFG would certainly have fit the sound of Clouds.
