Always good to see a Joni mention. It was driving me nuts trying to figure out when this story was meant to have taken place because it seemed now, and yet not-now. Turns out it was the 90s. Not so long ago, but cell phones weren't a thing even then. (How times have changed within the lifetimes of my own children!) Cheryl Strayed (according to wikipedia) is 46 now and she was 26 at the time she hiked the PCT.
