I don't smoke tobacco, but if it's like pot, I find I can put it away as long as I keep practicing. This is a measure for someone who has passed the youthful resilience that can overcome self-abuse. When you're older you can't bounce back so easily. Painting chops, on the other hand, can survive youthful rough treatment. I think. But then you have Matisse who came to the cut-outs because he couldn't paint anymore. I'd like Tom Lehrer to give us a few more great songs as well as Joni (AND: Stevie Wonder), but don't, um, hold your breath.
