Ibm tagging on to Lauriebs elegant post as Ibd echo many of its sentiments. This list, which I joined the day after our first gig as a band playing Jonibs music nine years ago, has been a font of knowledge, friendships - many, actual ones at this point, and many more to be made actual - and support. Because of it we heard about, and got to attend, Jonifests in England, L.A, New Orleans and got to host our own in the mountains of Idyllwild in 2009. Because of this list I decided to take the plunge and release a CD of Jonibs music, as interpreted by my amazing band - Safaris to the Heart, in 2010 - and because of this list it passed the break even point years ago! This year, I took the risk again and we put out Hejira Live, largely to mark what a level Mutts of the Planet have reached and of course because it is Hejira - what engineer/producer wouldnbt want to bmakeb his favorite record? Reviews of both have been glowing, but as Laurie said, there are a few reactions fron Joe Public that show that, for some, Joni is a sacred cow to be worshipped ! and never attempted by mere mortals. Fair enough, but in that case the music becomes a museum piece. We prefer it to be vital, reshaped, and represented to a whole new set of ears as well as for the boomers who loved it all along. As I have written before, we are entitled to consider certain music the new Classical music of our era; Joni qualifies for this. bCoveringb music is a pop-rock term, loaded with the inference that it is a pale imitation, but no one calls a string quartet playing Beethoven a cover band. They are honoring the work of a great composer and keeping it live and relevant, more than just the notes Ludwig wrote, if the quartet is good and no doubt different from the way he heard it. Jonibs namebs in the news, everything is first class. The new box set is garnering much respect and attention, perhaps to her surprise. She doesnbt play anymore or care to, so we can maybe conclude that THIS is her final offering (unless the vast four hour ballet of it can be pulled off.) Itbs been an incredible career, just shy of fifty years, and her work has been a beacon, a refuge, a holy book, a mirror, and a sanctuary for generations of people worldwide. Looking ahead, 2015 holds the promise of the Lincoln University Joni symposium in the UK, Bobbs Jonifest and more - the Mutts are booked to play Mingus again at the Idyllwild Jazz festival in August and our first presentation of that concert just ranked #9 in a best of 2014 list of jazz concerts in San Diego, Americabs sixth largest city. Jack M - the recording is in the pipeline. love and friendship to all of you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. That explains a lot better what I was trying to get at ... That I did mostly agree with Mr. Ford but felt I had to defend her "technique." I love what you say about her right hand, too. I try every day in practicing her songs to try and mimic that technique. It's a very slow go. :-( Good luck with getting your presentation accepted!! With someone else playing acoustic guitar for her, it wouldnt have sounded like Jonis music, any more than the Beatles would with a more technical drummer than Ringo. Her knowledge of guitar was confined entirely to playing her own songs in tunings Joel Bernstein had to keep track of for her. She had no idea what her chords were called, other than her painterly adjectives for them. Her right hand technique was quite wonderful, however, especially her arched hand position. However, coming from a very versatile guitarist like Ford who could read, play different genres, solo, and improvise contrapuntal parts, her playing may have seemed quite limited in technique. Its not a put-down; in fact considering her limited technique it is incredible how much great music she got from it. I agree that the piano writing and the language she created on piano, was very special, and totally unlike her guitar writing - almost a different composer. On piano, her left hand technique of rolling eighth note arpeggios, was very plain and undeveloped, but what she played against it, rhythmically and harmonically, was really different. That is some of what I would talk about if I get to present at the Lincoln Symposium. Dave Happy New year everyone! > On Jan 3, 2015, at 12:29 PM, Susan E. With the guitar or on the dulcimer, she didn't have a lot of technique on those instruments. But on the piano, she developed her own language. It became orchestral, like her mind. She had a big mind. So, I couldn't agree with you more. It was an amazing period, certainly in her music - but it was an incredible legacy in music in general." > > I wonder if Robben Ford thought Joni's guitar technique was lacking because of the alternate tunings ... But I totally disagree with this statement ... I do agree however that when Joni started composing on piano the full story of the amazing musical colors in her head came to fruition ... I am currently learning I Don't Know Where I Stand for my next instructional video, and I think it should be called Concerto in F for Trumpet. :-) > > Sent from my iPhone > >> On Jan 3, 2015, at 12:04 PM, "TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com" wrote: >> >> Website) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jan 2015 14:03:32 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: Signed copy of boxed set The winner is....
