That's pretty funny Jeff. I know where the Saskatoon is, it's a stone's throw from where I am right now in fact. I have eaten there a couple of times: http://www.saskatoonrestaurant.com/ They specialize in wild game and if you get their special there's no telling what you'll get...I've had Emu, Elk among other things. Catgirl and Ashara would NOT be pleased. Maybe we can do a stopover during Jonifest 2015, that way JMDLer's can say they've been to Saskatoon! Back to topic...I don't think I would have too much of a problem with sequencing because I have been shuffling those records for so long, but Court & Spark and HOSL are definitely the TWO where the songs are really programmed to flow one to the other. My BS detector is ringing. There seem to be too many references to comparisons that Joni herself has drawn which seem like thinly veiled research, and rehashed contextualization. I smell a faint odor of sycophancy: "Oh Joni, you're so much like Pablo and Miles. Truly I understand everything about you." I will bet that there's a paragraph dedicated to Beethoven that didn't make the cut. Maybe I'm the cantankerous one? I should be appreciative that someone found the venue and the words to illuminate and educate about this project and promote it this well. The writer captures a lot of the issues we have talked about here on JMDL during the past year and the piece strikes me as fair and balanced. Neither sycophantic nor viciously critical, seems a realistic appraisal - but then, what do I know? However, I do hope Joni's pleased by it and gives it a read, Anita On 30 December 2014 at 19:51, wrote: > Wow and wow...this is pretty brilliant - far and away the finest overview > of the purpose of this collection. One by Harry, on by Bob (supposedly Lay lady Lay) and one from Joni. So if there was a song for the movie by Joni (and that's if) what was the song? The ended up taking the song Everybody's Talking which was written by Fred Neil and sung by Harry and was used already when shopping the movie. Peace, Happy NP: Randy Newman - It's so hard. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2014 01:56:18 +0000 (UTC) From: Jeff Clark Subject: Review and Kennedy Center Honors The review is pretty good in that the writer understands how brilliant Joni is and at the same time to hard to categorize. It is pretty amazing that Joni's albums sold so well in the 70's, despite not having hit singles (except for Help Me) and being very challenging music. They all went gold pretty quickly up to Mingus. Around here they play alot of classic rock and baby boomer music. James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Neil Young, Eagles, Rondstadt, etc, but almost never Joni. So are these her peers? Not really, although in a way they are, up to a point. I like seeing her stuff being included in what is thought of as the Great American Songbook. Much of it belongs there. So are her peers Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Gershwin, etc? Kind of. I don't know if she'd like to be compared to Sondheim, though. Some reviewers have likened her songs to Schubert (art songs) the early songs and songs like Amelia. The poetry is often compared to Keats. Is she a rock star, a cabaret chanteuse, a little of both? She needs to get a Kennedy Center Honor. Its about to start now. Its nice that she got the TNT tribute and the Polar Bear Prize, but almost everyone watches the Kennedy Center Show and it would help put her in peoples consciousness. Maybe next year.
