For those of you interested in non-English covers, here's the translation of the two French versions of Both Sides Now. The first one by Eddy Marnay is amazingly close to BSN, especially the first version, sung by Marie Laforet. When Nana Mouskouri covered it Marnay changed verses 2 and 3 slightly. Canadian singer Christine Charbonneau (who passed away earlier this year) kept BSN's basic duality of fantasy versus reality, but took the song to a different (weirder?) place entirely...Happy holidays.M Ive learnt nothing. (Eddy Marnay) When Id see the clouds throwing shadows on the leaves I thought seashells were wandering in the sky. But today I know there's only snow and rain in their cotton wool, Ive seen them more than once piling up above me. Ive seen the sky from both sides, its days of glory, its days of truth, And its real sad to think that Ive learnt nothing at all. I wanted to let my heart dance the dance of happiness, I thought that love was born in a fairy story, But today I know you often have to leave an too-warm bed Smiling so as to hide everything youve given. (Version 2: I wanted to let my heart dance the dance of happiness, I thought that love was there, since you were there. But today I know one often has to leave an over-warm bed And yet if you were to come back, it would start all over again.) Ive seen love from both sides, its days of glory, its days of truth, And its real sad to think that Ive learnt nothing at all. Discovering every morning that you hold the world in the palm of your hands, Full of pride and ambition, friendship as a song; And stranger-friends who tell you Youve changed; All the wisdom gained, and whats been lost. (Version 2:Ive had miserable mornings, Ive had the world in the palm of my hands, Ive seen friends speak to me like strangers; Then wisdom came and replaced the lost joys, But other joys came, and I forgot everything.) Ive seen life from both sides, its days of glory, of truth, And its real sad to think that Ive learnt nothing at all. I Hadnt Understood (Christine Charbonneau) My paradise is on this earth, with flowers for universe, Trickling honey on bees, I live for my sun; Even if men have torn down what I call my paradise, Ill always hold on to the hope that I can light up this fog. With a man whos stronger than everything, Ill build up from end to end The dream life of a girl who has never really grown up. I want to believe in my destiny: my children playing in the garden, A man chops wood for the fire, we burn with the desire to be happy; Even if, to live, I have to be a waitress in this cafi, I need to believe that one fine day somebody's order will be a life of love. With a man whos stronger than everything, Ill build up from end to end The dream life of a girl who has never really grown up. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2014 10:06:50 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: And another review of LHMF Pop Matters gives it a 7 out of 10, and calls Dancin Clown "painfully dated". http://goo.gl/JUO3Gn Bob NP: Greg Laswell, "How The Day Sounds" (remix) - ------------------------------------------------------------ The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material. I learned how to play violin (not very well) in 6th grade, and always attended chorus and participated in plays (although mostly as a stage hand making the props and back drops). All that stuff was so much fun. And I had a crush on Science Teacher Mr. Fluhr who played guitar and sang like John Denver and had one of those manly 70s mustaches. :) Susan Tierney McNamara email: sem8@cornell.edu From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com [mailto:Bob.Muller@fluor.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2014 3:51 PM To: Susan E. You know, I REALLY love the non-English covers because it involves so much more work to translate and create words that will still scan properly with the melody and rhyme, etc. Can be harder to search for those because while I'll do a search for "People's Parties" I'll seldom do one for "Folks Fester". :-) Plus, it shows how much Joni is ADORED all over the world. I hope she feels that. I really do. The chorus versions of BSN's always get me a bit emotional too, because it takes me back to 1969 and Mrs. Galvin's class. We sang BSN, I Am A Rock, and a couple of other songs in her class. She'd pass out the words and play the record and we would sing along. Plus, she was tall and pretty and had a big ol' beehive hairdo and I had a schoolboy crush. That might have been the first time I ever heard BSN! B I also listened to In France They Kiss on Mainstream and when she sings, "I SAID take me to the dance" although I hear a similar sound to what she sings in Songs to Aging Children Come, it has more of an "ed" sound than an "ad" sound. B Joni is talking about crying and weeping right before talking about listening... so maybe sad does fit. B But ask Marianne or anybody from Rochester, NY to say "said," and you'll hear "sad." B Ask an Arkansan to say "said" and you'll hear "Sid." B Ask somebody from the midwest like Kansas or Nebraska to say "said" and you'll hear "sed." B B It would be a good question to ask Joni. I do like my original list though and might actually make it and adding Hana, I really like that song. My other Joni Christmas idea is to compete with those plastic sharks that sing Mack the Knife. A Joni doll that when you squeeze it or hold up a picture of Jann Wenner says "Kiss my Ass!" and flicks a little shot glass of tequila, but that might not be ready until next year.
