I first gave the package a good going over and lo and behold there is a note from Joni in my box that explains that the sequencing is wrong on Act 2 and apologies as she changed her mind after it had gone to print. NOT Joni! I have never heard THAT story before. Can you say Blue? LOL! Anyways, my iTunes will not play the stuff in the correct sequence on Act 1. I even tried loading the files info VLC (another media player) and it also wants to do them in a diff sequence. Even if I put them in sequence by the track numbers they jump around. Weird! Is this some kinda weird Joni interactive think where she is randomizing my experiences with this project? Another funny thing. The genre listed on the disc in iTunes is Country and Folk. My interest was piqued, Dave, when you mentioned the Albanez > baritone guitar (did I get that right?). On my wish list is a performance grade Martin > or Taylor acoustic of excellent caliber (meaning pricey), and an electric guitar > (which I could probably get on craigslist). Sue, From: ACOUSTIC GUITAR Magazine - Aug. 1996 - Gearbox As Mitchell explored jazzier sounds in the late '70s, she turned to electric guitars. From 1979 until the mid-'80s, she performed with five George Benson model Ibanez guitars, which were set up by Joel Bernstein and Larry Cragg with a range of string gauges to accommodate her tunings. At that time, the Roland Jazz Chorus amp - which was invented, Mitchell says, so she could replicate her Hejira sound in performance - was an important component of her live sound. These days, Mitchell's main acoustics are a Martin D-45, a Martin D-28, and two Collings - a D2H dreadnought and the 3/4-size Baby seen in the cover photo - that she calls "the best acoustic guitars I've found since I lost my dear one." She says, "I need really good intonation, and one of the signs of really good intonation is how flashy the harmonics are with a light touch. You should be able to get them to bloom like jewels. Both those guitars have that capacity. Of the two, the big one [which was the primary guitar for Turbulent Indigo] records better, but the little one is so sweet to cradle. It's just the right size for sitting. I write a lot on it and I travel with it, which is kind of scary. I carry it on board with me, because I won't take a chance on it. I won't let it go into the hold and get mushed like my beloved." For performance, her acoustics are equipped with Highlander pickups, which she uses in combination with an external microphone. In the last year, Mitchell has almost exclusively played an electric guitar made by Fred Walecki of Westwood Music in Los Angeles, which she uses with the Roland VG-8 processor to electronically create her alternate tunings. The guitar is made with a very lightweight German spruce body and a neck that's somewhere between that of a Martin and a Stratocaster. That "electric guitar made by Fred Walecki" was actually a modified Fender Stratocaster. That's the guitar she played at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 1995. There are two pictures at Within a few months she found and switched to the Parker FLY Guitar, a lightweight electric Both of these guitars were used in conjunction with the Roland VG-8: V-Guitar System If <>you're interested in Joni's acoustic guitars, check out the COLLINGS Guitar WebSite. Have a ball! Did you see Mr Blackburn's advice about Baritone guitar? I guess so? The best thing for me when I performed Black Crow was to use an old Takamine I had for that one song with the heaviest gauge I could find (strings that were recommended for jazz I seem to recall back then). I tried to play Black Crow on Joni's Ibanez (from the Shadows and Light/Refuge of the Roads tour) and I remember it very fondly at a gig we did for Joni's 60birthday in 2003. We rocked, but that Bb on the bottom.... I know now that Joel Bernstein set up the bridges for Joni's guitars individually, for each song and for each of the ten guitars she used at that time. The Ibanez (number 2) that I had the honour of being the custodian of was used for "Just Like A Train" and "Raised on Robbery" and playing Black Crow just never seemed to work terribly well on it. I would avoid hitting the bottom string as it drifted more and more out of tune......I guess the person who would be most helpful is the custodian of the guitar used for "Black Crow" (whoever that might be) or, of course, Joel himself. He would surely know the secret to Black Crow, or Dave's baritone solution sounds well worth investigating. All the best!
