But the nationwide reaction makes me sadder. Why? Because it's laced with hatred on all sides. Hatred of black. Hatred of white. Hatred of kids. And cops. Of poor. And privileged. And that's the point about Ferguson. It's not about one young man and one cop. It's a mirror for us all. And, frankly, we're looking kind of ugly right now. Joni said that happiness is the best facelift. She's right. Except it's really kindness and compassion, not simply happiness. lots of love, Anne On 2014-11-25 11:38, Clint Norwood wrote: > Why does everyone think they know the truth when they don't? The batch you refer to aren't as bad...I take it as meaning those who seek solutions to mental issues through meditation, holistic and more natural methodology as opposed to simply finding the right pill (or combination thereof) to try and adjust one's mental state. Going past oneself meaning going past the ego and being honest and rational. Ahhhhh, sweet synchronicity. How many times have we talked about Joni and synchronicity here? So, my new all women band played our very first gig last night and I have to say we went down a storm. So I am pretty wired when I get home and feel full and pleased and delighted that our trip to see the Mutts perform Hejira and the Monday sing song on Dave and Robin's porch (and in particular MrBlackburn's pep talk) has led me back to playing again. I get waves of how fortunate I am and feel choked up with joy and so grateful to JMDL and JMDLERS. And then through the night I start thinking I really should submit an abstract of some kind for the University of Lincoln conference about Joni and see if I can get something accepted. Then I imagine myself presenting my paper at the Conference and being so overwhelmed at even trying to explain what all this has meant to me for the past 46 years....... Anyway, this morning I started to play with some ideas for a paper and then thought I am being ridiculous. What could I say or add about Joni that hasn't been said or done? Then Steph says "there aren't many who know more about Joni's music than you" and, I thought, well there are quite a few..........but I was grateful for her encouragement, nonetheless. So off she goes to get the Sunday paper and I thought "Give me a sign. Then I'll know what to do." Ten minutes later, Steph comes in with the London Sunday Times, we sit down for breakfast, I open the paper and head straight for the Culture magazine, as I do every Sunday, and on the front cover is full picture of Joni, (The Lonely Painter) and a three page interview by Bryan Appleyard titled "Portrait of a Genius." What do you reckon? Shall I go for it? Plus it seems consistent with Joni's own approach to health. Of course I'm not sure what to think of someone who deludes themselves into believing that cigarettes are good for them. My uncle is schizophrenic and my nephew, sadly, has just been diagnosed. I wonder if Joni is talking about the mental illness that happens genetically or the mental illness that happens through dealing with the chaos and madness in life. Those seekers of mental health to me, are people who gravitate toward a more healthy way of dealing with the noise, the chaos, the injustice and the madness of life. Yes, I say, let their big light shine!! :-) Plus lets support a more civil and healthy way of dealing with our family members and neighbors who suffer from the genetic forms of mental illness. They really need our help and not a perpetuation of stigma. I know many can't believe that Joni stooped to This Little Light of Mine" kind of level, but I have a soft spot for this pedestrian dirge. I was particularly focussed on the lines at the end: "Shine on the pioneers Those seekers of mental health Craving simplicity They traveled inward Past themselves... May all their little lights shine" Probably as an acknowledged seeker of mental health myself, I wondered why Joni might refer to these/us particular seekers as "pioneers" and what is it to travel inwards and 'past' oneself. And passed or past oneself to where? I love the idea of "craving simplicity" when one's mental state is precarious. Anyway, I'd really welcome your insights/ideas about this, With my little light shining through a chilly November day, Anita ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2014 11:58:39 -0800 From: "Mark" Subject: Re: Don't It Always Seem To Go? I say go for it, Anita. What have you got to lose? You have that 46 years and the writing skills to do it. It is an investment in time and energy but there is something to be said for the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment you get from the knowledge that you actually created the piece. I would love to read whatever you create. And Dave Blackburn, I hope you can find the time to submit 'The Martians Have Been Here'. I know you both could make valuable contributions that would be of interest to all who love Joni Mitchell's music.
