MORRIS ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2014 07:46:59 -0600 From: Laura Stanley Subject: Shades of Scarlet Conquering Guess what beautiful Joni friends?! I switched the song to dance to with my son at his wedding reception from "Shades of Scarlet Conquering" to "How Deep is the Ocean" by Jason Gould and his mother Barbra Streisand after our discussion here on the list a while back. The wedding was Saturday, and when the DJ called me to come up to dance with Michael at the reception, Joni's beautiful piano started playing Shades of Scarlet Conquering! I thought oh no!!!! But what do you do?! So naturally, I started singing it to him as we danced, like I've sung along with Joni to him all his life, and the beauty of the song and Joni's transcendence of time in our lives deeply touched people, my brother being the first to tell me how beautiful it was. Afterwards when I was talking with my husband about it and I said the lyrics weren't appropriate for the occasion and I quoted, "a woman must have everything," he said, "she should." So, for the record, Shades of Scarlet Conquering became the perfect song for the mother-son dance. It is such an incredibly beautiful song. Thanks Joni!!! Ethiopia has always been my favorite track on DED and as of today is the ONLY song on DED that has a released cover recording of it. The ONLY one. The 2nd, by Italian singer Lara Puglia, just came out this month and it's pretty darn cool. You can find it on youtube and listen if you're so inclined. Certainly not going to become a standard but how can the 'most-hated' song on DED wind up the only one that has moved forward? As my son would say, "cite your source please". Likewise, MATW isn't the most popular song on WTRF (that would be "Be Cool" by a wide margin, and getting more popular every year) but it is top 3. The least popular song on WTRF, both in terms of covers (0 so far) and our JMDL polls that we've done a couple times, is Underneath the Streetlight. Still, it's pretty cool to see all this new Joni exposure! When Joni was doing her acoustic sets in the 90s to promote Turbulent Indigo and Taming the Tiger, she would always play MATW, and listening to her play it brought a new appreciation for this song for me. So percussive and jazzy!! Plus there is a back story to the image of moon at the window that goes back to the heartache and her pregnancy in '64 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iUUKaJoQ50 Susan Tierney McNamara email: sem8@cornell.edu - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Sent: Monday, November 24, 2014 10:31 AM To: c Karma Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: re: The Interview Like Chris I am a bit dumbfounded by this comment.
