There is some nasty distortion on the vocals (on Sisotowbell Lane as I recall) and at least some of the bizarre reverb that drenches the album was David Crosbys idea of having her sing into a grand piano, making the strings vibrate sympathetically. Its the kind of idea a stoner would have! But instead of it being an optional effect that could be added to taste in the mix I believe her vocal was printed with it. Also, who knows if the original mutitracks to those early albums even exist anymore? It was not uncommon for master tapes to vanish into someones storage attic or be wiped altogether to be reused, saving money for the label. If it does still exist it may not be playable if has not been kept in a climate controlled vault. Old tape formulations often degraded over time and the magnetic layer would turn to dust upon playback. So, revisiting old recordings and trying to bring them up to date sonically is not as easy as it might seem. I think that everything on SoaPG was remastered. My copy is at work but I think most everything was much improved. And I think it was the first time that Joni's studio take of Urge For Going was on CD. Except for SoaPG, and as far as I know, the Reprise titles haven't been touched since. (The reissues on LP were modern, quiet pressings, much better than the quality which Reprise sold in the 70s.) "Joni Mitchell: The Complete Geffen Recordings" featured remastered discs. I heard a big improvement on "Dog Eat Dog" but very little difference on the others. These are just my opinions, off the top of my head. I welcome anyone to research it and prove me wrong. From a pure fidelity perspective, I think Mingus, Travelogue, and BSN would take the cake. But really, fidelity is not as important to me any more. Joni captured tons of great performances, fidelity be damned! In 1931, Irving Mills said, in part > it don't mean a thing > if it ain't got that swing To anyone interested in what this whole topic is about, compare the piano sound on C&S to the richness on Tori Amos' "Under The Pink". As I have refused to buy any of those releases that contain songs that I already own because I bought the original albums several times (first on vinyl, then on CD, some as remastered CD, so I guess that's "enough" now), I have not kept track with all those "remastered" recordings. Which brings me to the question: How many different remastered versions of songs are there now? I really would like to know! As for the "curated" song order by Joni M.: I don't know about you here (tell me!) but I have converted everything to digital (as for the flac-sensitive folks here I will not mention the terrible **3 format;) and are able to play songs according to playlists which is not a new concept. I do not need a new box set to listen to songs in the Joni order, I can grab the songs that I already have and play them in that sequence should I see a reason why I should do so. moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2014 10:40:47 -0700 From: Jeff Clark Subject: Joni box set I have no problem with Joni putting out another compilation. There are people who haven't been fans of hers for 30 years that might enjoy it. I liked her Beginning of Survival compilation. I bought that even though I had everything on it. I like the sequencing of it. There are people who if they have a lot of disposable income will buy anything. I bought a lot of Joni stuff over the years many times, now I'm missing alot of stuff, so if I want to hear something I just click on Youtube. I don't know that much about the audio and recording process. I know that when I click on Joni doing Mr. Tambourine Man with Pete Seeger (one of my favorites) it sounds great to me, like they're both in my house. I was just watching Joni's demo version of Two Grey Rooms, I never heard that before. Cool. Its interesting to be able to hear a song of hers when the music is sorted out but the words haven't come in yet. There is an interesting video of Sire of Sorrow on youtube that depicts animal suffering. The images are disturbing, but they match the music and lyrics perfectly. I'm reading this book now by Daniel Levitin called The World in Six Songs, How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature. He mentions Joni quite a bit. I guess he's something of a personal friend. The album that really needs work is the first one. Joni says in that interview in her house that she wants that album redone, but there is no money for it. I wonder if money was not an issue, could something be done to make that album sound better? Fortunately there are some live versions of those songs out there. The live version of Sisotowbell Lane is so much better to me that the studio version. I would really love to see some attention paid to that first album. I would definitely buy it. So basically, now that I have the playlist, I can just create my own playlist in iTunes. Right? Why would I spend $60 on a reorganized list of songs I already own in various formats? Just for the artwork? Or have I missed something, like Joni returning to the studio and recording everything again with different musicians? Sigh.
