Subject: Joni's Artwork & New Boxed Set At least it looks like we'll get to see some new artwork from Joni..... as seen on the cover and the CDs. ~Maybe~ we'll see even more inside! Thanks for that link, Moni. Fortunately there are "bootlegs" and youtube performances of her early songs for fans to enjoy. Joni was an incomparable live performer we know. She never seemed interested in having any "official" release of any early live performances like Neil and others have done. She is the ultimate perfectionist, but maybe someone can think of a way to release some stuff appropriately. Maybe some day there will be a "true" box set that is very special. In the mean time, anyone can watch her on the Dick Cavett show doing Chelsea Morning and Willy. Thank Goodness for that. There is some nasty distortion on the vocals (on Sisotowbell Lane as I recall) and at least some of the bizarre reverb that drenches the album was David Crosbybs idea of having her sing into a grand piano, making the strings vibrate sympathetically. Itbs the kind of idea a stoner would have! But instead of it being an optional effect that could be added to taste in the mix I believe her vocal was printed with it. Also, who knows if the original mutitracks to those early albums even exist anymore? It was not uncommon for master tapes to vanish into someonebs storage attic or be wiped altogether to be reused, saving money for the label. If it does still exist it may not be playable if has not been kept in a climate controlled vault. Old tape formulations often degraded over time and the magnetic layer would turn to dust upon playback. So, revisiting old recordings and trying to bring them up to date sonically is not as easy as it might seem. Joni says in that interview in her house that she wants that album redone, but there is no money for it. I wonder if money was not an issue, could something be done to make that album sound better? Fortunately there are some live versions of those songs out there. The live version of Sisotowbell Lane is so much better to me that the studio version. I would really love to see some attention paid to that first album. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2014 18:46:26 -0700 From: "Mark" Subject: Re: New Library item: Joni Mitchell Set to Release 'Love Has Many Faces' 11/17 Based on the title, I suspected that this new release had something to do with the ballet and the difficulty of the selection process for the songs that would be included. Looking at the track lists, I see threads here and there and then just when I think I'm developing something out of it, she throws in what seems to be a ringer. Of course, without the lighting, the dance and all of the visuals you can't really flesh out a concept. The visual aspect of 'The Fiddle and the Drum' was essential to the work. I love the music and I can see how she might feel the need to make something out of the long and difficult process of selection and sequencing. But I'd much rather be able to see the ballet that was the purpose of the whole selection and sequencing process than shell out close to sixty bucks for, as others have stated, a collection of songs that I could make myself from the CDs I already own. That was the reason it was cancelled, so we were told. A four hour production would require a much bigger Alberta Ballet company, but who knows? I'd so love that. All the Reprise/Asylum/Warner were remastered in HDCD format by Joe Gastwirt. They are playable on regular CD players, but reveal their full 20-bit potential on a HDCD player. I only have a few. I compared FTR and the difference was subtle, a more open top end. STAS, however, was a major upgrade, for once, the mud was gone, delicate beauty! C&S, too, was much improved from the original lousy sounding disc. (note to self-upgrade your DJRD). The HDCD discs have the HDCD logo on the back cover and on the disc itself. Then there are the MFSL and DCC versions of some titles. The only two songs remixed to date are BYT and PPlains. RR ps can I just buy the box without the discs? pps Bob Dylan has released boatloads of rarities, same with The Dead, and The Stones are fixing to release more live archives, grumble, grumble...I thought Joel Bernstein was gonna get a box set together, grumble... ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2014 #345 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here:mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
