This thread had me thinking of another favorite Joni vocal collaboration with Jimmy Webb around the same time on his 1972 Letters album. Joni sang backup vocals on Similie. It is hard to find a recording out there but this might work http://www.last.fm/music/Jimmy+Webb/_/Simile Jimmy write of Joni's influence on him and their friendship in his book Tunesmith. Also there is this from LINER NOTES FOR JIMMY WEBB'S LETTERS by Richie Unterberger: "Letters was a more sedate, piano-oriented album than its predecessors, and soaked in the influence of Webb's peer and eventual close friend Joni Mitchell. "I was tremendously influenced by Joni Mitchell," he admitted to Peter Doggett of Record Collector in 1994. "She was a good friend, and I was fortunate enough to be around her when she was working on For the Roses and Court and Spark. We were just part of each other's lives for a while. I definitely envied that part of her work -- the idea that this is just a conversation you're listening in on. It can still be poetry, but not self-conscious or forced poetry. I got extremely under her spell as a writer -- I still am. I used to go to the studio and listen to her record, sit quietly in the back of the control room. After the Beatles, Joni was the next big blip on my radar screen, in terms of, 'Hey, pay attention: this girl is doing something a little bit different.'" Mitchell's longtime engineer Henry Lewy also did some engineering work for Letters as well. Joni's influence is most apparent on one of the record's stronger cuts, "Simile," inspired by an incident at the Los Angeles Troubadour club. Webb had sent her roses and a letter after seeing her perform there early in her career, but the letter wasn't found by Mitchell until a few years later, as alluded to in the song's opening verse." Makes me happy too, but i'm think I'm getting over it now. I probably listened to it 20 times total. I don't think I've met you, but are you the one whose son is getting married? I was confused about that whole thing about what the song is for. Around here most weddings end with a drunken melee of YMCA/I Will Survive or Friends in Low Places. They're fun to watch. When Mark asked if I meant the song Shine or the whole album for the dance I then thought why not have a Joni dance marathon where you dance to all her albums from the beginning, like in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? It could be a benefit for something, or you could win a trip to Saskatoon (LA is too expensive). I might make it through about half of Ladies of the Canyon, but probably other people have more stamina. The early stuff is a little slow, so you'd have to liven it up, i.e., you could do the tango to Nathan laFraneer, the jitterbug to Marcie, etc. Just thinking. Hi Jeff, Don't think I've met you, but I enjoy what you say on this list. I hear Joni more clearly with each listen of Paul Williams singing Out In the Country, and I've probably listened over 20 times now and already had my morning dose. I like Paul singing it better than Three Dog Night. He lacks nothing in the way of being an incredible singer of this song in my opinion. Right before the harmony starts I can feel Paul's anticipation of it in his burst of enthusiasm as he sings. It really is awesome! I feel the same as Lesli - most of us here in SoCal saw the ballet when it was performed at UCLA, and some have had the opportunity to meet Joni at other events. However, if I could see an exhibition of her paintings for the $100 membership, I would jump on it, whether she showed up or not! There was a previous mention here of another event to take place at the Hammer Museum on Oct. 11th. It is their annual "Gala in the Garden" honoring Joni for her art. It is more of a private, formal affair and elsewhere there is a reference to the tickets being $1,500 for last year's gala. When I win the Lotto and become a rich philanthropist......haha! http://hammer.ucla.edu/support/gala-in-the-garden/ Kakki ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2014 #331 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here:mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
