Haven't heard the name Paul Williams for awhile. Does anyone remember back in the '70's or early '80's he had a contest (maybe a yearly thing ?) for singer/songwriters to send in their cassette tapes and/or lyrics and win studio time with him or have famous singers sing your song? I wish now I could remember where I heard about the contest. I do remember entering more than once with a cassette of my own composition, singing and accompanying myself on piano (it probably hit their trash bucket after about 2 seconds ....LOL) and entered a poem/song lyrics which was more of a wailing lament about missing my deceased father and of the hopeless circumstance I found myself in with mom & her husband #2. I think I probably wrote it when I was about 16 but submitted it in my early '20's. I didn't win, but did receive an honorable mention with some good critique from Mr. Williams himself. It was quite thrilling! Thanks for posting the link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTpzTbk8cgI It was very exciting to listen to this today, and hear Joni in the background! Also, to learn of the link between the two of them. Hadn't a clue! I didn't have older siblings who already had record collections, close-by cousins, etc. I mentioned having my cds, everyone of which I bought, scattered lost, given away, etc. For many years I took meticulous care of albumns, then CDS, but moving around a few times, it got harder to do. I remember when I had about 4 or 5 hundred cds, I threw out all the plastic and then just kept the disc in the front booklet that comes with the cd. I still have alot that are stored like that. I never got into mp3s, napster, anything. For the past 10 years I still mostly listened to CDs (or the radio) when I wanted to hear something. Really only the last few years have I been to youtube. I think its wrong to enjoy this stuff without paying for it. I would be happy to pay a monthly charge to hear things on youtube. I thought it was going that way. Subscribers pay for the monthly use and then perhaps it cuts down on the advertising that you have to put up with. It is a subject i think about alot.
