Yes, especially with contemporary tools, which are quite forensic in their precision, you can quite dramatically improve the listening experience of recordings. Its never as good as the recording or mix being just right in the first place, of course, but you can foreground or background frequencies, giving the impression of an improved mix and fix many problem areas. Its not always what youd expect either; Bernie Grundman taught me that to bring out a vocal he often cuts the frequencies below it, as opposed to boosting the vocal area. My friends system is quite an equipment list but what I was listening to was a Studer A80 < tape deck through a preamp and four monoblock tube power amps (not sure of brands but the tubes were from 1943! One amp powered the bass and the other the mids and highs, per side) into Apogee planar ribbon speakers from the 80s very much like this http://tinyurl.com/nu6pgac. The room had nice acoustic treatments as you would find in a mastering suite. I was wondering, do you think a remaster could ever dramatically improve the listening experience, considering the nature of the original recording ? Also, I would be curious to know the list of components of your friend's sound system if that is possible please?
