This snippet of music in amazing and mind-blowing, whereas what is on either side of it is so uncharacteristic of Rachmaninov that it would have been unrecognizable to me. What is on either side of this 22nd Variation leaves me as cold as Bach or Mozart or some other Barok composer would. Rachmaninov's other works all have a recognizable emotion to them. Please just listen to these 3 and a half minutes to get what I am sure is what touched Joni so deeply: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E7XHOotTX0 I meant not to write for some time but this is important for me to convey. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2014 17:32:26 +0100 From: Anita G Subject: Re: Mutts of the Planet's Hejira Live will be available in one more week Hello Scott I am with Mark on this - 'Safaris to the Heart' is extraordinary. Dave's production values and Robin's voice are sublime. I have also just checked out the You Tube clips of the 'Hejira' concert that I was so very fortunate to attend. Can you believe the quality of the sound on those You Tube clips? Outstanding. I wrote a review of the concert here on JMDL and ended it by saying what a privilege it was to have been there in Carlsbad in June. As well, am making the trek to San Diego to catch them do the "Mingus" record which is an amazingly brave and complex body of work to tackle. I have been honored by getting wonderful reviews (honestly) and have as well provoked comments like "This is the worst album I have ever bought" on Amazon. Theo Bleckmann told me a little controversy is always good! I haven't posted any of my reviews for the group to see - they are all on my website here if anyone is interested: www.laurieantonioli.com/news. The one that excites me the most, however, is that we got out of the jazz media circle (finally!) into a really cool online magazine called "Elmore" - - never heard of it until now but is truly an eclectic music magazine - here's the review - http://www.elmoremagazine.com/category/reviews/albums The reviews of the other albums on this site got me checking out some artists that I'd never heard of before. Hannah Aldridge is particularly cool - I like the rock/country/original music she's doing. A bit of Sheryl Crow/Dixie Chicks/Gillian Welsh vibe. I just bought her CD!! She is only 26 and writing some amazing songs: http://hannah-aldridge.com/about-me/ Like Laura Marling (who I would have not known about be it not for JMDL) she is wise beyond her years. Wishing you all a wonderful day. Life is busy, but I often take time to check in and keep track of what the group is discussing. It's become a nice place to visit - with my work I'm on the computer a lot (too much) and taking little breaks with JMDL is my guilty pleasure! Dave's translation and Robin's amazing voice give this track such atmosphere. I was reminded of that again when I went to the Woodstock Tribute on Aug 9th. Adrien Reju, a young artist and Joni lover, played RNH as in Miles of Aisles, (the backup band was great) and she even played the triangle! I love when artists get the details right. When a book is that good and about a favorite subject, I can't put it down. It is hard to describe all the ways that this one is so wonderful. It is the most true and real depiction of Joni I've ever read. While it contains a variety of conversations over 40 years, it is consistent and filled with insight and revelations - even between the lines. I kept feeling overwhelming relief as I read through, grateful to Malka Marom for letting us get to know Joni through careful editing that always frames the correct context, includes the salient points of the conversations and even adds in where Joni laughs so the reader can see get an idea when she is joking, lighthearted or being philosophical. After all the "chop jobs" we've read of Joni over time, it was so refreshing. There are some experiences in her life that she has waited until now to reveal. They confirm a a few thing that we may have suspected and also set any assumptions and pre-conceptions on their head. Very happy for this book.
